DESIGN OF MOBILE FLOOD WALLS ALONG MARIKINA RIVER

Abstract

Mobile flood walls are removable aluminum walls used in Austria in controlling flood cause by
the Danube River. It can hold millions of gallons of water, and it holds 15 feet of water, back in the 2013
flood in Austria. Each post of the wall was placed in concrete and aluminum footing that extends 5
meters in the soil foundation.

Marikina City also faced this kind of problem. Back in 2009, Marikina City was devastated by
Tropical Storm Ondoy. The rain brought by Ondoy caused the Marikina River to rose 23 meters above
sea level, flooding the 14 of the city’s 16 barangays. Marikina City suffered the most during Ondoy.
Three years after the devastation caused by Ondoy, rains brought by Habagat caused the Marikina River
to reach its deadly level of 19 meters in the evening of August 8, 2012. There was a significant water
level increase of 9.49 meters because of the continuous rains at that time. Two years later, Marikina
City again suffered great flood caused by the Habagat in 2012. Habagat was straighten by Typhoon
Mario and caused the river to rise to its critical level of 19.9 meters. A total of 36,027 residents were
evacuated to 39 evacuation centers.

The span of experiencing these great floods was shortening. Climate Change caused these kinds
of events and it will sure happen again and again. The 5th Year Civil Engineering Students of
Technological Institute of the Philippines Quezon City, proposed this design of mobile flood walls used in
Austria to battle floods in Marikina City.
