CURRENT EVENT #___

1. In one or two paragraphs describe the events in the article, answering these basic
questions. What happen? When did it happen? Who or what did it affect?

On September 20, 2017, Indonesian authorities double the exclusion zone around
Bali’s Mount Agung because they fear the volcano could erupt in any moment. A 7.5-
kilometer exclusion area has been set up around the volcano and a 14-day emergency
alert period. This alert period has caused incoming tourists to cancel their flights to Bali.
This will cause the country to use more funds on the exclusion area and evacuating
everyone near Mount Agung. Also, many people cannot come to Bali which will
decrease the percentage in tourists visits for Indonesia. In the future, this eruption may
potentially destroy buildings, farmlands, and even people around the volcano. Natives
also say that the volcano ash will cause engines to stop causing harm to vehicles and
factories.

2. Where did it happen (country/state/city)? Were the effects felt outside of this area?

This incident happened on an island called Bali in Indonesia. Currently the effects aren’t
affecting the outside area but when the volcano erupts, the ash from the volcano will
affect nearby islands.

3. What are the short term and long term effects?

The short term effects would be that the Indonesian authorities would have to put up an
exclusion zone for a few weeks until the volcano erupts. Long term effects would be the
evacuation of the island and the restoration of the island when all the lava has been
removed.
