a. What spatial figure was seen in the
pictures?........................................................................... SQUARE PYRAMID

VERY GOOD 
These spatial figures is called SQUARE PYRAMID.
b. Where can we find these pyramids? From what
country?........................................................................... We can find it in Egypt

Yes, VERY GOOD!!! 

We can find these pyramids in Egypt.

4. Motivation.
a. I have here a model of a Square Pyramid (show a
square pyramid)

b. The teacher will give each group a model a square

pyramid.

What is the shape of the base of the pyramid?................................. The shape of the base of the
pyramid is square.
How many lateral faces does it have?.......... It has 5 lateral faces
What is the shape of each face?................... The shape of each face are
triangle and square
What can you say about the lateral faces?... Possible answers: 4 triangles
are congruent/equal

VERY GOOD! 
How do you find the area of the triangle?
What is the formula?.................................... bh
2
How about the square?................................. s2 or s x s

B. Developmental Activities

1. Presentation
I have here a given situation. Who wants to read?

Pupil A, please read……………………………………….

A square pyramid has a base of
12 cm and a slant height of 15
cm. What is the surface area of
the pyramid?
Everybody read…………………………………………… ------------------do-----------------

A square pyramid has a base of 12 cm and a slant

height of 15 cm. What is the surface area of the pyramid?
OK Class, let’s analyze the problem.
a. Let the pupils point to the class which is the base of
the pyramid, the height and the side/edge of the
square base.

Pupil B, point out to the class which is the base of the pyramid….. Pupil B point out to the class
which is the base of the
pyramid.
Pupil C, point out to the class the height of the pyramid…………. (Pupil C) -Do-
Pupil D, point out to the class the side/edge of the square
base……………………………………………………………….. (Pupil D) -Do-

VERY GOOD Pupil B, C and D!!! 

b. Abstraction and Organization

Class, what kind of pyramid is mentioned in the problem?............. Pupil’s raise their hands.
Answer: Square Pyramid
What is asked in the problem?......................................................... Pupil’s raise their hands.
Answer: What is the surface
area of a pyramid?
How can we get the surface area of a pyramid?
Now that’s the question that we are going to answer later.

2. Discussion - Representing the problem into modeling

a. Show a square pyramid and its net

Since we are asked to get the
surface area we will get the area of
its faces.

How many faces that it have?........................................ There are 5 faces.

What kind of plane figure has each face?...................... Square and triangles are the
plane figures has in each face.
What can you say about the faces of the pyramid?........ The faces of the pyramid are
congruent.
What is the shape of its base?....................................... The shape of its base is square
How do we find the area of squares?............................. s2 or s x s
How do we find the area of triangles?........................... bh

C A D This is a net of a square pyramid

Let’s name each face as
A, B, C, D and E.
E
Face Formula Finding Area Area
A sxs 12 x 12 144 cm2

B bxh (12 x 15) + 2 90 cm2

2
C bxh (12 x 15) + 2 90 cm2
2
D bxh (12 x 15) + 2 90 cm2
2
E bxh (12 x 15) + 2 90 cm2
2
2
How can you find the area of the square base?................................ s or sxs

How about the area of each triangular face?................................... bxh

2
Since the 4 lateral faces are congruent, what will you do?.............. Multiply it by 4 or 4(bxh)
2
What will you do with areas of each face to get the surface area of
the pyramid? (504 cm2)…………………………………………… We have to add the five faces of
a square pyramid to get the
surface area.
So, what do you mean by surface area?........................................... Surface area is the sum of the
areas of all its surfaces.
Therefore, what is the formula to find the square area of a square
pyramid?........................................................................................... Surface Area of a Square
Pyramid (SA) = sxs + 4 (bxh)
Solution: 2
Surface Area of a Square Pyramid (SA) = sxs + 4 (bxh)
2
Area of the base = sxs
= 12 cm x 12 cm = 144cm2

Area of the lateral faces= 4 (bxh)

2
= 4(12x15) = 4 (180) = 4(90) = 360 cm2
2 2
SA = 144 cm2 + 360 cm2 = 504 cm2

Now class, let’s derive another formula

sxs This is our base which is the area is sxs

And when we combine the 2 triangles, what figure will be form?

Let’s see.

bxh bxh

What figure are these?...................................................................... These figure are parallelograms

How to find the area of parallelogram?........................................... The area of parallelogram is

VERY GOOD!  bxh

How many parallelograms are there?..............................................

There are 2 parallelograms
Therefore,

SA = sxs + 2(bh)

area of square

area of 2 parallelograms

Now, let’s use this formula in the given situation.

Solution:

Surface Area of a Square Pyramid (SA) = sxs + 2(bh)

Area of the base = sxs
= 12 cm x 12 cm = 144cm2
Area of 2 parallelograms = 2(bh)
= 2 (12 cm x 15 cm)
= 2 (180 cm2)
= 360 cm2
SA = 144 cm2 + 360 cm2 = 504 cm2

OK class, what have you notice to the answer of our 1st

formula compare to the 2nd formula?...........................................
They are the same Ma’am
VERY GOOD! 
The answer in the first formula is the same with the answer in the
second formula.

Or just,

SA = sxs + 42(bh)
21
Therefore,
SA = sxs + 2 (bh)

3. Practice
Solve for the answers. (Pupils write the correct answer on
their own drill board.)
The group 1 and 2 use the 1st formula while the group 3
and 4 use the 2nd formula.

1. Kim would like to make a model of a square Pupils raise their drill boards
pyramid whose base is 6 cm and 8 cm high. What is
the least amount of cardboard needed for a model?
------------------do----------------
2. SA = ?, If
b = 9 dm
h = 9 dm ------------------do----------------

3.

12 cm

------------------do----------------
5 cm
4. Generalization
What is surface area?........................................................... Sum of the areas of all its
- Surface area is the sum of the areas of all its surfaces.
surfaces.
How do we find the surface area of a square pyramid?....... 1. Get the area of a square base
- Get the area of a square base (sxs) (sxs)
- Get the area of its triangular face and multiply it
by 4 ( 4 (bxh) ) 2. Get the area of its triangular
2 face and multiply it by 4
- Then add the 2 areas ( 4 (bxh) )
How about the another formula?..................................... 2
- SA = sxs + 2(bh) 3. Then add the 2 areas

VERY GOOD!!!  SA = sxs + 2(bh)

The formula to be used to get the:

Surface Area of a Square Pyramid :
(SA) = sxs + 4 (bxh)

5. Fixing Skills (Group Work)

Do what you are told to do.

Divide the class into four groups. After 5 minutes. The group
leader will present their work.

But before we begin, what should we remember or consider when

doing group activities? We should--------------------------------------

1. Always cooperate with our

group mates.
When you are done, what will you do?--------------------------------- 2. We should always keep quiet.
3. Follow the instructions of the
teacher.
And the group leader will submit your work and present it to the 4. Keep our work clean and
class. neat.

Group leaders, come in front. Here’s your assign task. We should go back to our
proper seats and keep quiet.

Read it carefully and answer accordingly.

Each group will be provided with a white board marker.

If you are already done, post your work on the board.

You only have 5 minutes to finish your work.

You may now begin.
