“Deriving Formula and Solving for Surface Area of Square Pyramids”
(Detailed Lesson Plan)
I. Learning Objectives
Cognitive: 1. Derive a formula in finding the surface area of a square pyramid.
2. Solve for a surface area for a square pyramid.
Psychomotor: Write a formula or equation in solving for a surface area of a square pyramids.
Affective: Show preciseness or accuracy in measuring things.
Class, let’s have a group activities. I’ll group you into four, and
choose your leader.
VERY GOOD
These spatial figures is called SQUARE PYRAMID.
b. Where can we find these pyramids? From what
country?........................................................................... We can find it in Egypt
4. Motivation.
a. I have here a model of a Square Pyramid (show a
square pyramid)
What is the shape of the base of the pyramid?................................. The shape of the base of the
pyramid is square.
How many lateral faces does it have?.......... It has 5 lateral faces
What is the shape of each face?................... The shape of each face are
triangle and square
What can you say about the lateral faces?... Possible answers: 4 triangles
are congruent/equal
VERY GOOD!
How do you find the area of the triangle?
What is the formula?.................................... bh
2
How about the square?................................. s2 or s x s
B. Developmental Activities
1. Presentation
I have here a given situation. Who wants to read?
Pupil B, point out to the class which is the base of the pyramid….. Pupil B point out to the class
which is the base of the
pyramid.
Pupil C, point out to the class the height of the pyramid…………. (Pupil C) -Do-
Pupil D, point out to the class the side/edge of the square
base……………………………………………………………….. (Pupil D) -Do-
bxh bxh
SA = sxs + 2(bh)
area of square
area of 2 parallelograms
Solution:
Or just,
SA = sxs + 42(bh)
21
Therefore,
SA = sxs + 2 (bh)
3. Practice
Solve for the answers. (Pupils write the correct answer on
their own drill board.)
The group 1 and 2 use the 1st formula while the group 3
and 4 use the 2nd formula.
1. Kim would like to make a model of a square Pupils raise their drill boards
pyramid whose base is 6 cm and 8 cm high. What is
the least amount of cardboard needed for a model?
------------------do----------------
2. SA = ?, If
b = 9 dm
h = 9 dm ------------------do----------------
3.
12 cm
------------------do----------------
5 cm
4. Generalization
What is surface area?........................................................... Sum of the areas of all its
- Surface area is the sum of the areas of all its surfaces.
surfaces.
How do we find the surface area of a square pyramid?....... 1. Get the area of a square base
- Get the area of a square base (sxs) (sxs)
- Get the area of its triangular face and multiply it
by 4 ( 4 (bxh) ) 2. Get the area of its triangular
2 face and multiply it by 4
- Then add the 2 areas ( 4 (bxh) )
How about the another formula?..................................... 2
- SA = sxs + 2(bh) 3. Then add the 2 areas
Divide the class into four groups. After 5 minutes. The group
leader will present their work.
Group leaders, come in front. Here’s your assign task. We should go back to our
proper seats and keep quiet.
15 cm
10 cm
IV. Evaluation
Solve the following answer. Label your answer.
1. How much wrapping paper is needed to wrap a square pyramid and has a 8 cm as its base and 10
cm as its height.
a. 224 cm2 b. 220 cm2 c. 225 cm2
2. The Grade Six pupils made a model of square pyramid made of plywood. It is 6m high and has
base of 8m. What is the surface area of a pyramid?
a. 165 m2 b. 160 m2 c. 150 m2
3. SA = ?
20 cm
10 cm
4. SA = ?
5.5 cm
2.5 cm
5. SA = ?
b=3m h=5m
a. 30 m2 b. 39 m2 c. 40 m2
V. Assignment
Answer the following:
1. b = 40 cm h = 125 dm
Find the surface area.
2. SA = ?
