MV 305 — APPLIED MECHANICS
Maximum : 100 marks
Answer ALL questions. PART A — (10 x 2 = 20 marks)

1. Two equal forces act at a point with an angle of 60° between them. If the resultant force is
20-/3" N, find the forces.
2. State Varignon's theorem.
3. Define angle of friction.
4. A screw jack has a square thread, 75 mm mean diameter and 15 mm pitch. The load on the jack
revolves with the screw. The coefficient of friction at the screw threads is 0.05. State whether the
jack is self locking.
5. The efficiency of a machine is 80% when an effort of 15 N is required to lift a load of 130 N.
Calculate the velocity ratio and the frictional force of the machine in terms of effort and load.
6. For a differential wheel and axle the diameter of 'wheel is 2-50 mm, The larger and smaller
diameters of the differential axle are 100 mm and 90 mm respectively. An effort of 30 N is
applied to lift a load of 900 N. Determine velocity ratio, mechanical advantage and efficiency.
7. A central circular hole of diameter 30 mm is made on a square lamina of side 60 mm. What is the
moment of inertia of the remaining surface about a centroidal axis parallel to a side?
8. State the theorem of perpendicular axis.
9. A particle moves along a straight line so that it displacement is metres from a fixed point is given

10. An elevator weighing 5000 N is ascending with an acceleration of 3 m/s 2, During this ascent its
operator whose weight is 700 N is standing on the scales placed on the floor. What is the scale reading?
What will be the total tension in the cables of the elevator during this motion?

PART B — (5 x 16 = 80 marks)

11. (i) What is irreversibility of a machine? Derive the condition for irreversibility of a machine, (7)

(ii) There are 4 movable pulleys in a system of pulleys of the first type. If a
load of 1440 N is lifted by an effort of 100 N, find the efficiency of the
machine, effort wasted in friction and the load wasted in friction. (9

12. (a) Two identical rollers each of weight W = 1000 N, are supported by an inclined plane and a
vertical wall as shown in Fig. 12 (a). Find the reactions at the points of supports A, B, C and D. All
surfaces may be assumed to be smooth. OR
(b) The lines of action of three forces concurrent at the origin pass respectively through points A (-1,
2, 4), B (3, 0, -3) and C (2, -2, 4). the magnitude of the forces FOA, FOB and Foe are respectively 40 N, 10 N
and 30 N. Find the magnitude and direction of the resultant

13 a) A puil of 20 N, inclined ai 2 ° to the horizontal is required to just move 0~ body placed on a rough
inclined plane. But the push required to move the body is 25 N, inclined at 25" to the horizontal. Find
the weight of the body and the coefficient of friction. (Refer Fig. 13 (a)). OR

(b) Referring to Fig. 13 (b), determine the least value of the force P to cause motion to impend rightward.
Assume coefficient of friction under blocks to be 0.2 and puilev to the frictionless.

14. (a) For the plane section shown in Fig. 14 (a), locate the centroidal axes and determine the
moments of inertia about them. OR
(b) Determine the radii of gyration for the plane section shown in Fig. 14 (b), about its centroidal axes
XX and YY.

15. (a) At a mine, a train of dump cars Is pulled along a level track from A to B as shown In Fig. 15
(a) and then up a 5% grade. At C, 100 m up the grade the last car becomes detached while its velocity is 24
km/hour. If the car weighs 20 kN and the track resistance is 8 N per kN, determine

(i) How far up the grade will the car continue before stopping at D? (ii.) Will the car stop at D or

move down again down the slop?

(in) If the car moves again down the grade, what will be the distance traveled by the car beyond B on the
level track before stopping at E? Take g = 9.8 m/s2 OR

(b) A hammer of mass 1500 kg drops from a height of 800 mm on a pile of mass 750 kg. Find
(i) the common velocity after impact assuming plastic impact
(ii) the average resistance of the ground, if the pile comes to rest after penetrating 50 mm into the
ground.

5. Express the moment of inertia of a semi-circular section about centroidal axes.
6. How will you locate the principal axes of inertia?
7. State the principle of work and energy.
5. Bring out the difference between direct central impact and oblique central
impact.
8. Give the causes of rolling resistance.
9. What do you mean by general plane motion?
PART B — (5 x 16 = 80 marks)
11. (a) Determine the tension in the cables AB, AC and AD if the crate shown in fig.l. is weighing 10 kg.

10. (b) A 120 kg crate is hung by means of two cables AB and AC, which are attacked to the top of a
vertical wall. A horizontal force of 200 N perpendicular to the wall holds the cylinder in the
position as shown in fig.2. Determine the tension in each cable.
12. (a) An A-shaped frame supports a load of 3500 N as shown in fig.3.

Determine (i) the floor reactions at A and E (ii) the pin reactions at B on AC and
(iii) the pin reactions at C on CE. Neglect the weight of the members and assume the floor to be
smooth. OR
(b) A precast concrete post weighing 5Q^kg and of length 6 m is raised for placing it in position by
pulling the rope attached to it. Determine the tension in the rope and the reaction at A. (fig.4.)

14. (a) If a 50 kg block shown in fig. 7 is released from rest at A. determine its speed after it slides
10 m down the plane. Take the coefficient of friction as 0.3, Use principle of work and energy.

(b) (i) A car has weight of 15 kN and is travelling horizontally at 20 m/s.


Determine the time needed to stop the car if the coefficient of
fraction between the tyres and the pavement is 0.6. Use principle of
impulse and inomentunm. (12)
(ii) Explain the principle of conservation of energy.( 4)

15. (a) The forces acting on the block are shown in fig.8. Determine whether the block is in
equilibrium and find the magnitude and direction of the friction force. Take us = 0.35 and //,. = 0.25

. b. In the linkage ABCD shown in fig.9. the crank AB has a constant angular velocity W^B- 6 rad/s
counter clockwise. Determine the angular velocities of the connecting nod BC and of the crank CD.
