The auxiliary heater protects the engine and reduces its wear.
Thanks to the auxiliary heater which preheats the engine, the pollutant emission is substantially re-

On petrol engines, the production of hydrocarbons, nitrogen oxides and carbon monoxide decreases
roughly by half.

Introduction

Auxiliary heater
The auxiliary heating system allows us to set the
optimal climate conditions in the vehicle interior
using the heating or ventilation mode so that the
vehicle interior is already heated, if necessary
ventilated, before entering the vehicle.

By using the auxiliary heating system, we prevent

the frosting and fogging of the glass panes which
would otherwise obstruct the driver's view.

Wearing heavy winter clothing in the vehicle re-

duces the effectiveness of the seat belt - the play
between the belt and the person's body increases
because the seat belt does no longer fit tightly
across the body.
Wearing appropriate clothing in the pre-heated
vehicle interior increases the protective effect
of the seat belt and the responsiveness of the
driver.

Introduction

Combustion conditions
The auxiliary heater is a heating system that
burns fuel. During this process, energy is re-
leased in the form of heat, which subsequently
heats the liquid in the cooling circuit of the vehicle.

The combustion process is determined by three

basic factors:

1. Actual fuel – raw material which is converted

into heat energy.
The fuel from the fuel tank of the vehicle is
injected into the combustion chamber of the
auxiliary heater by means of the dosing pump
of the AH.

2. Actual oxygen – enables the combustion dur-

ing which the fuel is converted into energy.
The air supply is ensured by means of a fan
which is a component of the body of the auxil-

3. Required temperature – prerequisite to en-

sure the flash point.
After activating the auxiliary heater, the electric
current is conducted to the glow plug, which
operates on the principle of electrical resist-
ance and is heated by applying voltage.

For all the Škoda models produced in series,

an auxiliary hot water heater Thermo Top V is
provided as an optional equipment.

As part of the range of Škoda Auto original ac-

cessories, an auxiliary heater can also be retro-
fitted in the vehicle, in this case a Thermo Top
Cwater heating system.
The range of original accessories also includes
the Thermo Top C version with remote control.

Operation of the auxiliary heater

There are three ways of starting the Thermo Top V auxiliary heater:

• Programming the auxiliary heater with the data display protocol via the multi-function display.
• Starting the AH with the instant heat button on the dash panel of the heating and air conditioning
system.
• Using a separate remote control for the auxiliary heater.

Programming the auxiliary heater

The function of the auxiliary heater can be pro-
grammed using the multi-function display.
In the menu Aux. heating the following basic set
of entries are prepared:

• Weekday
• Running time
• Mode

SP79_17
Set the current weekday as well as the running
time of the auxiliary heater in the range of 5–60
minutes and set the heating or ventilation
mode using the entry mode.

The weekday, hours and minute for the starting

time of the AH can be set in the menu Aux. heat-
ing under the three pre-set times 1, 2 and 3.

The LED indicator light on the dash panel of the heating and air conditioning system notifies if the aux-
iliary heater is switched on or the activation period is programmed. The indicator light comes on when
the auxiliary heater is switched on. If the activation period is programmed, the indicator light comes on
for about ten seconds after switching off the ignition.

Electromagnetic valve of the coolant N279
After starting the auxiliary heater, the electromag-

and now the heat from the AH is only made avail-
able to the coolant flowing to the exchanger, which
in turn heats the air directed into the interior of the
vehicle.

This valve is not used in an auxiliary heater in

combination with TSI petrol engines (T-FSI) and
diesel engines with a particle filter - DPF.

On these engines, the auxiliary heater heats the

Safety conditions for the use of the

auxiliary heater

• The auxiliary heater must not be used within

a closed area! The AH produces combustion
gases which could cause poisoning. Therefore,
the vehicle must not be within a closed area,
such as in the garage, when activating the AH.

• When filling up with fuel, the auxiliary heater

must always be switched off, otherwise there is
a risk of fire!

• When using the AH, you should not stand on

a surface that could ignite easily from the hot
exhaust gases of the auxiliary heater, for exam-
ple, dry grass.

Exhaust system

The heating unit is fitted with a separate exhaust

system, which consists of the exhaust pipe and the
silencer.

The exhaust system directs the resulting exhaust

gases independently from the exhaust management
system of the vehicle.

The length of the exhaust system is well defined and

coordinated with the pulsating combustion within
the heating unit. For safe operation, it is therefore
required to adhere to the established length of the
exhaust pipe.

Thermo Top C

Operation

The Thermo Top C auxiliary heater is equipped with

a timer that allows the activation of the AH to be
programmed.
The clock makes it possible to store three activation
periods, whereas only one can be activated each
time.

The system can also be supplemented by a remote

control with Telestart transmitter T91.

The receiver of the remote control is then located

under the dashboard - to the left of the steering
column.
