Solution to Sam-Sum Circles

It is possible to make any sum from 12 to 18. Below I show one solution for each sum:

Sum of 12: Sum of 13:

8 7 6 6 3 72 5
4 5 3 2 4 1 8
1

Sum of 14: Sum of 15:

8 7 5 2 6
6 3 8 2 4
1 4
5 1 7
3
Sum of 16: Sum of 17:

1 7 4 5 6 1 7 2 8 6
8 2 5 3
3 4

Sum of 18:

1 7 8 6
5 4
2 3

The highest possible sum we can have in each circle is 18. Why? Notice that the sum of
the numbers in the intersections goes up by 3 each time. We can’t have a sum of 19
because the sum of the numbers in the intersections (21) would have to be greater than
our target sum (19).
