Weight Indicators

Used to Measure Coiled Tubing Weight in

the well
Required to Span Complete Injector Push
and Pull Capabilities
Two Main Types
Hydraulic - can only measure compression
Electric - can measure compression & tension
Hydraulic Weight Indicators

Hydraulic
Hydraulic pressure is created in a closed
system from injector weight acting on a
bladder
Typical bladder sizes 16 in2 or 25 in2
Typical line pressures to 1,000 psi
Affected by:
Air in system
Ambient temperatures - heat and cold
Routing close to hot injector hydraulic hoses
Electric Load Cells

Strain Gauge Type

Applied load is measured by strain gauges
Output signal 4-20 mA or 0-5 V
Signal changed to gauge in cab by additional
electronics
Affected by
Accuracy can be affected by vibrations
Initial calibration should be across full system
span e.g. use hydraulic controlled test stand
to calibrate

Push

When the weight reading is a high positive number that means that the
weight of the pipe is hanging on the injector forcing it down onto the
load cell.
In this situation the pipe is in tension, and the load cell is in
compression.
When the weight reading is a negative number, such as when force is
being applied while drilling, the injector is pushing itself away from the
load cell.
In this situation pipe is in compression, and the load cell is in tension.
!
Pipe Heavy & Pipe Light Terminology

On some injectors there are two load cells. One is called Pipe heavy
(PH) and the other is called Pipe light (PL)
These load cells are located opposite each other on the base of the
injector
The values produced by both of these are used to determine the
amount of tension or compression being exerted at any time on the
pipe

What Can Affect
the Weight Indicator ?

Incorrect readings can arise from

Poor gooseneck alignment pushing coil onto

one set of chains

Wrong Injector and gooseneck Alignment

Weight gauge and injector not matching

Incorrect setup of Data Acquisition System

Setting of Weight Indicators

Weight indicators should be tested on

surface and compared to the hydraulic
pressure
The indicator should be set to the bottom
hole assembly weight with no fluids or
pressure in the lubricator
Both the analogue gauge and JobMaster
should be set at this time
This will allow a correct comparison to
