IIT-JEE
Joint Entrance Exam (JEE) is an All India Common
Entrance Exam for admission to engineering
colleges across India. It is conducted in two phases –
JEE Main and JEE Advanced. The IITs and ISM
grant admission based on the results of JEE
Advanced. The NITs, IIITs and other central or
state-funded institutes grant admission based on
JEE Main.
Students are eligible to write JEE Advanced only if
they clear the cutoff marks in JEE Main. Also, IIT
JEE is considered as one of the toughest exams in
the world. Over 14 Lakh students appear every year
and only 20,000 get a rank.
In the year 2018, around 2,24,000 students from
Mains Examination will become eligible for
appearing in the Advanced (IIT JEE) level of the
examination. Premier institutes like the Indian
Institute of Science (IISC), Rajiv Gandhi Institute of
Petroleum Technology and the Indian Institute of
Science Education and Research (IISER) grant
admissions to students on the basis of scores
obtained in JEE Advanced.
The IIT Council in September 2013 has approved
the decision of the Joint Admission board for
introducing the two-phase JEE pattern. In 2014,
JoSAA (Joint Seat Allocation Authority) conducted
the joint admission process for granting admissions
into 23 IITs and ISM-Dhanbad through JEE
Advanced (IIT JEE) and into 18 IIITs, 32 NITs and
19 other GFTIs (Government Funded Technical
Institutes) through Mains.

From the year 2013 to 2016, 40% of weight age was

given to 12th standard board exam in calculating all
India ranks of JEE Mains. However, there are no
such criteria from JEE Mains 2017 for deciding All
India Ranks. CBSE has also made mandatory for all
the students applying for IIT JEE to register with
the Aadhar card from the year 2017 onwards.
Eligibility for JEE

Students should have born on or after 1st October

1992 (for general candidates) and 1st October 1987
(for SC/ST & PwD candidates).

appeared for the first time in their class XII (or
equivalent) examination in 2016 or earlier, are not
eligible.

Candidates whose Class XII (or equivalent)

examination results for the academic year 2017-18

IIT- JEE Advanced Examination

Pattern

JEE – Advance Examination consists 2 papers.

 Paper 1
 Paper 2
Both the exams will be conducted on the same date. The
question papers will only be available in two languages –
English and Hindi. Candidates will have to choose the
medium they prefer at the time of applying for the exam.

Each paper consists 3 sections and exam duration of three

hours.
 Section 1 will be Physics,
 Section 2 will be Chemistry,
 Section 3 will be Mathematics.
Paper 1

 Section 1 will have 10 MCQs. Each question will have

four options with only one correct answer.
 Section 2 will have 5 MCQs. Each question will have
four options with one or more correct answer(s).
 Section 3 will have 5 questions with answers in single
digit integer ranging from 0 to 9.
 Section 1 will have 8 MCQs. Each question will have
four options with one or more correct answer(s).
 Section 2 will have 8 MCQs. Each question will have
four options with only one correct answer. This section
will have four paragraphs with theory, practical
aspects, data etc. 2 questions will be asked from each
paragraph.
 Section 3 will have Matching List type questions. Two
lists will be given with matching options coded as a, b, c,
and d. Students will have to choose options according to
the given code.
Paper 2

 The Upper sheet of the Answer booklet will be the

Optical Response Sheet (ORS), which is designed in a
way that machines can read your answers. It will
have two pages stuck together with no carbon in
between.
 Candidates will have to mark the appropriate
bubbles for each question on the front page, which
will automatically be recorded in the sheet below.
Hence, students must be careful that they do not
disturb the alignment between these two sheets or
separate them at any point of the exam.
 Do remember that you have to use only the black ball
point pen for the exam. Also, read the instructions
carefully as you cannot change the answers you have
marked already.
 Apply adequate pressure on the answer sheet. The
pressure should not be too much to pierce the bubbles
or so light that the impressions on the second sheet
are not visible properly. The invigilator will give you
the copy of the sheet at the end of the exam which you
can match with the JEE Advanced answer key later.
