Cloudwatching for Beginners

By Paul Manning

Sc.1 EXT PARK FIELD

Two young boys JACK and MARK are lying on the grass, hands
behind their heads, looking up at the clouds in the sky. They
are relaxed and carefree.

JACK

A gnome

MARK

A what?

JACK

A gnome. You know. Like what nanna’s have

in their gardens.

MARK

Like worms?

JACK

What? No not like worms. Like gnomes.

Little mesters with pointy hats and
fishing rods. Little statue things.

MARK

Oh them! You’re wrong!

JACK

Eh? No I’m not. They’re called gnomes.

Little men, in little hats, with little
fishing rods. They’re called gnomes.

MARK

No I’m not doubting that. I mean you’re

wrong about the cloud. It looks nothing
like a gnome.

JACK

It did! If you squinted. Anyway it was

better than your one that you said looked
like “a smaller, less scary version of the
yellow Teletubby”. You were wrong.

MARK

No I wasn’t. It did look like “a smaller,

less scary version of the yellow
Teletubby”!

JACK

Yeah, but Teletubbies aren’t scary!

MARK

They are! They’re huge and have tellys

for tummies and bounce around kicking
innocent bunny rabbits all over the place.
And there’s four of them so you’re already
outnumbered.
JACK

Bunny wabbits? Ickle wickle bunny

wabbits?

Really?

JACK points to the sky

Sonic the Hedgehog!

MARK

Erm...

JACK

If you squint hard enough!!

Both boys laugh
