Organ transplant

Why are organs important for an organism

They are important because they help you live and keep you alive every day.
The several organ systems have their own function and work together.

What is an organ transplant?

Organ transplantation -- the surgical removal of a healthy organ from one person and its
transplantation into another person whose organ has failed or was injured -- is often lifesaving and
gives the recipient a wonderful new lease on life.

Wich organs can be transplanted?

Liver, heart, kidney, intestine, lungs, pancreas and tissues can be transplanted.

Which people are being considered for an organ transplant?

People which have unhealthy organs or have been in an accident and have injured organs, mostly are
being considered fora n organ transplant.

What are the two largest problems that organ transplant faces?
Most people who have an organ transplant live a pretty normal life. But organ transplants can still lead
to other medical problems. This is usually because of the medicines needed to suppress the immune
system so it doesn't "fight" the donor organ. The social problem is that too much people need an organ
transplantation. And way too little people want to be an organ donor.
what is Eurotransplant?
Eurotransplant is a non-profit organization that facilitates patient-oriented allocation and cross-
border exchange of deceased donor organs. Active for transplant centers and their associated
tissue typing laboratories and donor hospitals in eight countries, Eurotransplant ensures an
optimal use of donor organs.

By who, why and how was Eurotransplant started?

In Leiden, Prof. Dr. Jon J. van Rood (1926-2017) obtained evidence that the HLA (Human Leukocyte
Antigen) system plays an import role in the outcome of transplantation.

Which countries participate in eurotransplant?

Austria, Belgium, Croatia, Germany, Hungary, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Slovenia enz.

How does eurotransplant work?

Transplant professionals offer a donor organ to Eurotransplant instead of giving it to their own
patients. As soon as a donor becomes available, his or her characteristics are also recorded in the
same database. Using a sophisticated computer program, Eurotransplant can instantly produce a
‘match list’ for every organ that becomes available. This match list is generated based on
predefined allocation rules which take into account factors such as the blood group, time spent on
the waiting list and the relative urgency.

What is the role of the Netherlands?

In what way is European cooperation important for Eurotransplant?

When their more people on the donor list changes to find a match will increase.
By working together more organs will be available and more organs will match with a donor.
Making best use of available donor organs by matching each donor organ as well as possible with
its recipient.

awaiting an organ transplant

Scientist working together so their knowledge will increase as well.

What is the effect of Eurotransplant on organ donation?

More people will survive because Eurotranplant find more matches.

Because the work together with eight countries and several scientists.

What is the aim of Eurotransplant for the future?

Eurotransplant are trying to find more matches voor kidney donors and try to extend activities for
other organs such as the heart, lungs, the liver, the intestine and the pancreas.
Therefore more organs are needed and more people could survive.

Not only deceased donors are needed but living donors as well. Eurotransplant has made a
crossover programme to find all possible matches for transplantations.
At last the do more research to find better matches.

What is your opinion on the importance of organ donation and the added value of
Eurotransplant?

Saving lives by transplant an organ is important. For example your father, mother, brother or sister.
There are too few suitable organs available. So more organs are needed. By working together with
eight countries Eurotransplant increases the changes for a match.

Therefore more people will survive and will have a nice live with their families.

So we think Eurotransplant is doing a great job.
