What are the two largest problems that organ transplant faces?
Most people who have an organ transplant live a pretty normal life. But organ transplants can still lead
to other medical problems. This is usually because of the medicines needed to suppress the immune
system so it doesn't "fight" the donor organ. The social problem is that too much people need an organ
transplantation. And way too little people want to be an organ donor.
what is Eurotransplant?
Eurotransplant is a non-profit organization that facilitates patient-oriented allocation and cross-
border exchange of deceased donor organs. Active for transplant centers and their associated
tissue typing laboratories and donor hospitals in eight countries, Eurotransplant ensures an
optimal use of donor organs.
Eurotransplant are trying to find more matches voor kidney donors and try to extend activities for
other organs such as the heart, lungs, the liver, the intestine and the pancreas.
Therefore more organs are needed and more people could survive.
Not only deceased donors are needed but living donors as well. Eurotransplant has made a
crossover programme to find all possible matches for transplantations.
At last the do more research to find better matches.
What is your opinion on the importance of organ donation and the added value of
Eurotransplant?
Saving lives by transplant an organ is important. For example your father, mother, brother or sister.
There are too few suitable organs available. So more organs are needed. By working together with
eight countries Eurotransplant increases the changes for a match.
Therefore more people will survive and will have a nice live with their families.
