Definition of terms
Blindness-Damage to any portion of the eye, the optic nerve, or the area of the brain responsible for
vision can lead to blindness.
Central scotoma- is an area of depressed vision that corresponds with the point of fixation and
interferes with central vision.
Cones-They are responsible for color vision, function best in relatively bright ligh and provide
sharp central vision.
Juvenile macular degeneration-is the term for several inherited and rare diseases that affect children
and young adults.
Photoreceptors- is a specialized type of cell found in the retina that is capable of visual
phototransduction.
Rods-A type of specialized light-sensitive cell (photoreceptor) in the retina of the eye that provides side
vision and the ability to see objects in dim light (night vision).
Stargardt’s disease-is the most frequent form of inherited juvenile macular degeneration. Stargardt
causes progressive vision loss usually to the point of legal blindness.
World health organization- is a specialized agency of the United Nations that is concerned with
international public health.
Visual acuity-sharpness of vision, measured by the ability to discern letters or numbers at a given
distance according to a fixed standard.
Visual field- it is The entire area that can be seen when the eye is directed forward, including that which
is seen with peripheral vision.
Visual impairment- is a decreased ability to see to a degree that causes problems not fixable by
usual means, such as glasses. Some also include those who have a decreased ability to see
because they do not have access to glasses or contact lenses.
