INTRODUCTION
Tuberculosis (TB) is caused by bacteria
(Mycobacterium tuberculosis) that most
often affect the lungs.
● When a person develops active TB disease, the symptoms (such as cough, fever, night
sweats, or weight loss) may be mild for many months.
● Without proper treatment, 45% of HIV-negative people with TB on average and nearly
all HIV-positive people with TB will die.

THE NATURAL HISTORY OF PULMONARY TB
I. HEALTHY INDIVIDUALS
❏ A tuberculin skin test
(TST) which is negative,
indicates that a subject
had never become
infected with the
tubercle bacillus.

II. PRE-CLINICAL PHASE
❏ In the great majority of individuals
who become infected with the
tubercle bacillus, possibly 90%, these
small granulomas remain localized
and quiescent, become encapsulated
with fibrous tissue, and may
ultimately demonstrate calcification
of the central caseum.
