The context was the letter of Paul to the Corinthians.

Here Paul talked about the spiritual gifts of

prophecy and speaking in tongues. As Paul greatly encouraged the people of Corinth to give themselves
fully to the work of the Lord. The Corinthian church, there was an over-emphasis on tongues, and
an under-emphasis on prophecy. Paul told to them in vv. 1. Paul also wanted in vv. 5 that all must
speak in tongues but even more to prophesy. But in vv. 6 to 11 Paul talked about the confusions that
may brought by speaking in tongues to those who can hear and witness it. He compares it in a lifeless
instrument (vv. 7) and in a bugle (vv. 8). That’s why Paul told the people in vv. 12 to strive to excel in
building up the church whether in prophesying and speaking in tongues. Paul told also the people of
Corinth to observe the proper and orderly way of worship. In vv. 26 Paul said …. In vv. 36 Paul said a
command from the Lord that (read vv. 36 if anyone… writing to you).

The difference of the people in context and the people today is that on how they respond to the gifts
they have. Like for example in terms of speaking in tongues that people that time done only a few of
them but in this generation there are other churches or denominations who practiced it in public and
even practiced with a script it as a group that we consider it as wrong. And also that time the women are
not permitted to speak or preach in public for it will be shameful but this time there’s a gender equality
in terms of delivering the word to the people. As long as you’re convicted to speak you are free to speak
the revelations of God.
