This is the first day that me and Petty Officer Kenney met. We met at the US Navy Recruiting
office, 4550 E Broadway Blvd. We talked about how they recruit people. They mostly go to
schools and set up booths. Or they set up a classroom time with teachers, so they are able to
talk about what they do, the benefits of joining the branch, what jobs the students could get, and
the opportunities the military opens for them. The recruiting process is a long and tedious
process. You have two types of people, the people that already really want to join the navy, and
the kind you have to convince. Overall, I this was a good first day, a little introduction into the life
of a recruiter.

Today my mentor and I went over the different types of jobs in the United States Navy. For
example some of the jobs consist of
1. Culinary Specialist- Receive extensive training in cooking, learning all the necessary
skills to be able to cook for government official or even just cook for the men on the
ships. They are the “Heart” of the ship.
2. Intelligence Specialist- They collect, process, analyze, and organize information. Prepare
detailed materials that are able to communicate findings. Ultimately, help generate
insight that has strategic and tactical implications all over the world.
3. Medical Support- The provide emergency healthcare for those who are wounded, they
alos help take care of families back home.
Overall I had a fun time learning all the different jobs that the Navy offers

What me and Petty Officer Kenney did today was teach DEP students how to march correctly.
You need 2 rows of 3, called a squad. It is a test to see what they need to work on. The first
command is a preparatory command, and the 2nd command is a execution command. Feet
should be at a 45 degree angle when at attention. Then a series of movements are given to the
cadets to test them. Such as, Uncover, remove the hat, and about face a full 180 degree turn.
Always lead with left foot. After that was knowledge test, on the Sailor's creed, Orders of the
Sentry, and Phonetic Alphabet. This was very interesting, getting to learn about the basic
knowledge of the Navy, however, it is difficult to remember all of it.

Today my mentor and I talked about the process of being able to join the Navy, having to go
through Meps. Which stands for Military Entrance Processing Station, and that is where you go
and take the ASVAB, which stands for Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery, and the
scores that you receive tell you what job placement is best for you. After the ASVAB you go
through a series of medical exams and interviews. You have a eye and hearing test, a physical
endurance test, a thorough physical exam, blood test, and a urine exam. The interviews are
mainly with choosing your job and background records, which consist of taking fingerprints and
checking your police record, if you have one. All these tests are to see if your healthy and able
to join the United States Military. If you pass all of those tests and choose a job based of the
scores you received off the ASVAB, then you will swear in, and you are now a member of the
United States Military, and be placed into DEP, Delayed Entry Program. I felt as though I
learned a lot of usefull information

Today my mentor and I talked about DEP. The recruiting offices have this meeting once in a
while called a MEGA DEP. They do a series of exercises, physical training, and knowledge, the
winner gets to be the best recruiting office until the next MEGA DEP. DEP meetings are also a
great way for a new Cadet to learn their stuff. This was very interesting because it made you
look at how hard you have to work to do well in the Navy.

This is the day I went to MEPS, Military Entry Processing Station and take my ASVAB, Armed
Services Vocational Aptitude Battery test. We left the recruiting station at noon, to drive to
Phoenix, Arizona which is where MEPS is located. We arrived at 3:00 P.M. which then we were
to go through a metal detector and to place my belongings in a designated area, we were not to
have any electronics, only our wallet. We then proceeded to a desk were we then gave our
name and social security to verify who we are. The desk clerk took our picture and gave us a
name tag and told us to wait in the waiting room. I waited about an hour, then my name was
called and I proceeded to the testing room. The test took two hours. The ASVAB was broken up
into many different topics, such as Math, Science, Mechanics, Reading, and a Cyber test. The
Cyber Test was to test our aptitude with computers. I scored above average, and then I waited
for a charter bus to our hotel. This was a very long and tedious day of many many hard
questions , but I had a great time and I finished with a above average score.

Today I went back to MEPS early in the morning. This is the evaluation, interviewing and
swearing in day. I went through a series of tests to see if I am fit enough to join the United
States Military. I had a hearing, eye, physical(sports), urine and blood test, and another physical
were we do a series of exercises to check how our muscles act and to test our balance. I had to
interview with the doctor, to verify my medical evaluations, I had to interview with a Navy official
to choose my job, and I had to meet with a man who checked my background with police and to
take my fingerprints. I also filled out a lot of paperwork. Finally my favourite part, swearing in.
We stand in a room, looking very much like a court, and repeat "I, (NAME), do solemnly swear
(or affirm) that I will support and defend the Constitution of the United States against all
enemies, foreign and domestic; that I will bear true faith and allegiance to the same; and that I
will obey the orders of the President of the United States and the orders of the officers
appointed over me, according to regulations and the Uniform Code of Military Justice. So help
me God." This was a fun day, the day I officially joined the Navy

Dec 6, 2017 1600-1800
Today I went to my first DEP meeting. We had the meeting at Golf Links Sports Complex, we
had all the future sailors from our recruiting station meet there for new future sailors introduction
into the DEP program. I had to stand in front of many other future sailors and say my name, my
job, and why I joined. Afterwards they recited "ONE TEAM-ONE FIGHT." That made me feel
welcome. After all the new future sailors went we recited the Sailors Creed, which states "I am a
United States Sailor. I will support and defend the Constitution of the United States of America
and I will obey the orders of those appointed over me. I represent the fighting spirit of the Navy
and those who have gone before me to defend freedom and democracy around the world. I
proudly serve my country's Navy combat team with Honor, Courage and Commitment. I am
committed to excellence and the fair treatment of all." This was very fun, what I like about it is
that it gives me confidence, it kind of gives me a feeling that we all have each others backs and
fighting for the freedom of democracy. Immediately after the Sailors Creed, we broke into a big
circle and stretched then split into teams for a good o game of kickball. However, there was a
catch, everytime we crossed home plate we had to answer a question to test our knowledge on
the Start guide, which is what we get at the beginning of DEP to study and learn the basics of
the Navy, My team lost by one point, so we had to run 5 laps around the bases. Overall I had a
great time, also learned a lot of valuable information.

Dec 14, 2017 1600-1700
Today I had a DEP mentor ship. The first thing we have to do when we walk into the recruiters
office is to stand at attention, salute the chain of command and the flag, then I asked
permission to come aboard. After that, I did some paperwork, that asked question, like have you
run into any trouble with the police?, and some weight questions. When everybody showed up,
we started the mentor ship. We drilled our skills on marching and commands. Then we went
back inside, to answer some question on chain of command, Orders of the sentry, phonetic
alphabet, and rank. I had a fun time with new Future Sailors and learning more of the basics of
the Navy.

Today we went to Rincon High and volunteered to clean up some trash around the school. We
moved weight equipment to better place. Afterward all the Future Sailors gathered around and
we talked about how volunteering is a big part of the navy, as well as a big part of building our
character. I had a lot of fun, it felt as though I could do this over and over again.
