and western India to Patna where bulk purchases were mad of the gorgeously embellished tikulis

made in gold and silver foils with glistering glasses acting as a solid bases. During this time the tikuli
enjoyed a vast Mughal patronage and the mare of dingy and dark lanes clustering around our
populated habitations in Patna were also engaged in manufacturing thousands of such bright and
beautiful Tikuli.

There are different types of creations made by boards of Tikuli designs.

Products such as mugs, stands, Trays are some popular stuffs

Mostly found tikulis boards are rectangular in shape as they are easily interpret and most of the
detail work can be observed on it as it has longer the work area. This shape is considered as the
standard shape to work on.

A complex composition is also proposed by placing boards of different shapes in a specified manner
or in order manner, just to convey a full message or a story in series.

THEME MEANING

Basically every craft of any region is based on the natural environment of that region. As any
handicraft of any region is the reflection of cultures, traditions and mindset of the people living in
that region.

Hence, talkinh about Bihar, first thing that comes into mind is ethnic traditions.
Typically, Tikuli arts are based on religious scenarios.
Madhubani motif are used in Tilkuli art paintings to increase its variety and expand the detail. It is a
treat to see these two brilliant art forms in one frame for many art lovers. The art requires mild
sunlight in orders to dry air room temperature because of the use the enamel paint. For finished
look, the art must be a dust free atmosphere. Favourable seasons are spring and summer while
monsoon being highly unfavourable.
PRESENT STATUS

Established in 1956, Upendra Maharathi Shilp Anusandhan Sansthan conducts research and training,
product development activities and also tries to safeguard the state’s languishing crafts. The home
of India’s some initial paintings. Bihar is tremendously rich in its arts and crafts.

UMSAS organizes wide range of public programs, like workshops, seminars, fairs, exibits, and
special events.

Presently these plates are used as well hangings, trays, momentos, and also various products can
also be prepared out of these boards.

Materials which are used in making these boards are easily found, such as their wooden
board with enamel paint done on it to enhance smoothness; But the process of painting on these
boards are very challenging for a layman.
CONCLUSION

In conclusion of this document I would like to add that I noticed a certain pattern of growth and
development in backward areas of Bihar as this heritage is being able to give people their desired
respect and even they are getting financially supported by the Bihar Government. And, on the other
hand the handicraft which was at one time was on the urge of extinction got the necessary spark
and became the pride of Bihar within a short period of time.
Awards & Honours

The most memorable moment where the God of Madhubani Paintings, “BAUAA DEVI” encouraged
the process of Tikuli art making.

After, a long revolution, honourable Chief Minister of Bihar “ Sri Nitish Kumar” examined the
detailed work and got impressed with the art work that Bihar has. He praised and made it as official
momento for “Bihar Divas” celebrated on 22nd March.
Tikuli art proved to be a major breakthrough as it not only added honour and name to Biswas
creations but also helped to launch the craft in a big way with greater commercial success.

Now, everyday is Patna a institute known as ‘SONA ART’ gives training to some 300
students free of cost, so as to fill the people of Bihar with the fell of their golden traditions.

With the changing times and for greater commercial versatility has also been introduced arid today
the Tikuli art has made its way into our homes in form of dinning table mats, dressings, table mats,
coasters, wall hangings. Tray, boxes, pen stands, and other decorative items.
MAKING PROCESS

Hardboards are used to make paintings by the artists. These hardboards and circular more
dominantly. Then, on the cut wooden piece, four-five enamel coats are applied. Then the painted
wood is rubbed with sandpaper after every coat giving it a polished surface.

Finally design is made by paint after the final coat. It is further embellished with golden foil and
jewels.
Many of the Tikuli art boards are made on religious scenarios so as to convey the delicacy and the
sophistication to the God. These topics are very common and are picked from day to day regular
routine. These includes lord Durga postures- during war, Lord ganesha, and the most famous and
good charm, the celebration of love between lord Krishna and Radha. As well as many more boards
are prepared on the life of Lord Krishna and his ‘Gopiyas’.

At last, Tikuli art boards are a symbol of traditions and culture and most importantly respect
to their God and their work.
This craft is now undergoing changes day by day. Now most of its experiments are so public and
ubiquitous. It has caught people’s imagination. This goes to prove its revolutionary innovative
capacity.

At the outset this craft was developed in tune with Madhubani paintings using hardboard wood
having enamel paint over it. This is also not an easy process.

Any ways, story of Tikuli art from its beginning to present has been very mesmerising and infact its
culture and techniques are still not known to some majority of people.
PURPOSE

The main purpose of this type of epic art was to give a new look to the very respectful dominant art
work popular in most part of Globe as ‘MADHUBANI’ . Infact the last product which we get often
completion of both the painting looks very similar, in the sense of colour, figures and medium how
through it is prepared. But, Tikuli is far different from Madhubani as Tikuli conatains more minute
detail and every posture and character drawn in Tiklui is very accurate with a specific types of glaze
and shine which makes it look and assumable like if it is painted on gold foil or glass base. Tikuli can
also be determined by observing dots on the work area.
SOCIAL CULTURE

Tikuli art being so old that is about 800 years old, which means it is and was only based on the
culture which was at that time. So, talking about social culture, it has all the sense and it shows the
evolution in the tradition of Bihar people from the very old age to this period.

Tikuli painting had influenced people a lot from the old times and, this painting shows the
original soul of people as through it they show their respect and devotion to God and also they
revive their whole life story through it.

Ultimately, this painting ispires new generation to move their life but with being connected to our
original culture and tradition. Even women tries to follow and they make it sure that they should
dress up like those characters shown in the picture, with all same hangings.

These paintings are best piece of momentoes, worshping board, etc

These are plates depicting same religious scenario, but orientation of board has been slightly tilted
to make a diamond shape arrangement.
Various shapes of boards are offered in Tikuli paintings on which stories depicting the life of God and
Goesses are drawn with anamel paint. These are found in many geometrical shapes, such as this is
circular.
EVOLUTION

This art form did not reach its annihilation and found its salvation in painter Ashok Kumar Biswas
whose single- handed crusade has brought tikuli art to our homes today.

Working on this type of particular form of painting since 1974, Biswas has never looked the other
way even with blatant government apathy or at a time when its commercial viability could be
questioned. But there was a time some 2500 years ago when the tikuli was a commercially
flourished trade item serving as a beauty aside for the royal ladies and attracting traders from the far
off states of northern.
