Rain Water Harvesting Project:

The area in which PES’s COE, Phaltan is situated suffers from drought conditions
frequently. This region also faces the problems of low rainfall. It average rainfall is
only 700mm. The frequent conditions of scarcity of water compels for best
management of available water. As a result, Rain Water Harvesting unit is
established in the college.
Rain water is collected from building is used for bore water recharge. Water is
reused for gardening purpose. The buildings are provided with Rain water
harvesting facility to help in maintaining and improving the water table and due to
this there has been a marginal improvement in the quality of the ground water in
the campus.
Following are step involved in Rain Water Harvesting.

the rain water

5. Filteration unit are constructed by following way;
a) Excavation and Cleaning of ditch- Excavation is done by using JCB and
it is cleaned by manually.
b) Hole for Recharge- Hole are made to bore well pipe for recharging
ground water as shown in fig
c) The filter unit consist pit which constructed around the borewell pipe
having size of 11x10x06 feet. They are filled with boulder at the bottom,
metal upto 2 feet above and then mesh is laid over bolder to avoid mixing
of layer. Grit and large size of sand and is laid over mesh of 3 feet height
to make a filter bed. In this way, the college saves 33 million liter water
in college campus.
