CH 30: WORLD WAR I

x Modern technology enabled the combatants to kill with unexpected efficiency. War turned into a savage
and exhausted fight, while the statesmen did not press for peace but rather demanded more mobilization.

x World War I (WWI or WW1), also known as the Great War was a global war originating in Europe that lasted
from 28 July 1914 to 11 November 1918. It became known as 'The Great War' because it affected people all over
the world and was the biggest war anyone had ever known. The war was fought between two powerful groups.

x The opposing sides were:

 “The Triple Alliance”: Germany, Austria-Hungary and Italy  later known as “The Central Powers”:
Austria-Hungary, Germany and the Ottoman Empire.
 “The Triple Entente”: Great Britain, France and Russia  later known as “The Allies”: France, Great
Britain, Russia, Serbia and the last one to join was USA.

Most of the fighting took place in to different fronts:

 The Western Front: it was where the most of the fighting between Germany and the Allies
happened. The system of trenches marked the location of this front. There was no man’s land
between the two sides. So, this was more a trench warfare.
 The Eastern Front: it was fought in Central and Eastern Europe. It was not trench warfare. It had
front lines of soldiers ready to fight the enemy.
