Essay 2015-16

Option A

Choose to focus on EITHER King Arthur OR Robin Hood then answer the following

question:

King Arthur / Robin Hood: fact or fiction? Is there any truth behind their legends?

To what extent do historians believe they existed?

If they didn’t exist, what are their stories symbolic of? Try to provide the historic

context of their story.

Option B

Guy Fawkes’ Day or Bonfire Night. Consider the celebration of Guy Fawkes’ Day

(November 5th) in Britain. Discuss the significance of this tradition in British

culture. What does it tell you about how the British commemorate their heroes and

traitors?

Important information

The essay will be done in class on December 2nd under exam conditions. You can

refer to your own notes on paper but you cannot refer to printouts, books, pre-

written essays or electronic devices.

Students should check a minimum of one written source (i.e. not a website)

besides their class notes and their textbook (R.G. Grant’s History of Britain and

Ireland: the Definitive Visual Guide).
