CHAPTER 1
INTRODUCTION

1.1 Background
A very rapid technological development makes many new devices
invented to meet the needs of human beings or just to give more specific function.
One that we often hear is “gadget”. Gadget is a small technological object that has
small size and some particular functions. Besides that, gadget has newer
technology which is more sophisticated than technology that was first invented.
For example, laptop and handphone, each is a form of gadget of a computer and
telephone that had been developed.
Human dependence on gadget will be increased because there are a lot of
function that can be performed by gadget. For example from the existing
technology, such as handphone. It is not only used as a communication tool, but
also as a camera, music player, video recorder, map & navigation, internet
connection, etc. Besides that, gadget can also indicate one’s social status. The
more expensive and sophisticated gadget that one have, the higher social status
that one get. However, protection and maintenance is strongly needed by the
owner of gadget, especially for the touch screen gadget which is more risky to be
broken.
Touchscreen is a visual electronic display that is easy to be used. One just
have to touch the screen with a special stylus/pen or fingers. This technology
becomes very vital because when it is damaged, the other features on the gadget
could not be started. One of the most common damage is scratch that could reduce
the aesthetic value of gadget or even interfere the function of gadget. Scratch can
appear on the screen as well as on the casing since the owner show less caution of
falling or rub against other objects when it is stored.
Protection could be done by using anti scratch product on gadget.
Nowadays there are a lot of anti scratch product that is available in the market.
However, none of them have met the needs of consumers. The better the quality,
the higher the price is, and vice versa. For example, those which have a good price
are easily to get damage, they only last for a few months.

UNIVERSITAS INDONESIA

Based on the National Statistics Agency, Indonesia GDP per capita income
for upper-middle class in 2013 is US$3000 a year whereas for lower-middle class
is US$1000 a year. Besides that, based on the Indonesian Provincial Wage
Councils, the price of a decent life for upper-middle class is US$2700, so all that
remains is US$300 for the additional needs, and the price of the decent life for
lower-middle class is US$950, so all that remains is US$50 for the additional
needs. Back to the anti-scratch products, the average price of a good quality anti
scratch products that exist today is US$20, and for the poor quality anti scratch
product is only US$2 (source : www.amazon.com).
The good quality anti scratch products are usually lasted at least one year,
which means one in the upper-middle class need 6,67% of their remaining money
and one in the lower-middle class need 40% of their remaining money just for a
good quality anti scratch. As we know that the cheap anti scratch products always
have a poor quality. Its are usually lasted for only three months, so that if one use
those poor quality anti scratch, they will need four anti scratch in a year, which
means the cost required for poor quality anti scratch is US$8 in a year. If we
compare it with one’s remaining money, one in the upper-middle class need
2,67% of their remaining money, and one in the lower-middle class need 16% of
their remaining money. Surely this is not worth, because there are many other
additional needs that are more important.
Therefore, anti scratch product innovation is needed. With the problems
that exist today (good quality anti scratch products are expensive and those that
are cheap, have a poor quality), we decided to make a new innovation of anti
scratch product which have a good quality such as lasted for at least one year, and
also has a friendly price for both upper-middle class and lower-middle class.

1.2 Objective
Our objective in writing this paper is to develop a general concept and
design of a product that specializes in protecting screen and case of gadget
especially from scratch. This new product would have a better design than the
existing product and solve all the main problems and consumers needs, such as
lasted for at least one year, and also has a friendly price for both upper-middle

UNIVERSITAS INDONESIA

class and lower-middle class.. By writing this paper and propose the design, we
hope that we could help people to protect their gadget from scratch in a better
way.

1.3 Problem Identification

Below is the list of the problem identification from the existing anti-
scratch product:
1. Most of the existing anti-scratch are still less resistant to friction with
rough surfaces and sharp objects.
2. Most of the existing anti-scratch product still could not stick strongly.
3. Most of the existing anti-scratch product have a limited/incomplete
features, thereby it still limits the consumers needs.

1.4 Problem Boundary

In order to narrow the scope of the problem to be more focused, we make
some statements about the problems to be the boundary. These are:
1. This anti-scratch product is made to protect screen and case of gadget.
2. This anti-scratch product is not easily broken.
3. This anti-scratch doesn’t cause negative impact for health and
environment.
4. This anti-scratch product is devoted to the domestic market.
5. Our main consumers are gadget users (smartphone, tablet, and laptop).
6. This anti-scratch product is a better variant of the existing product. It
would be lasted for at least one year and has a friendly price.

e. NEC and Apple Computer

In 1989, NEC and Apple Computer released their products, NEC Ultralit
and Apple Machintosh Portable. This laptop weight was no more than 2 kg.
Machintosh Portable was released by Apple Computer. Unfortunately the sales of
Mac Portable was not so good because its shape, which was not eye-catching.
f. Apple Power Books
The next laptop series of Apple Computer, Apple Power Books, was
released in 1991. It was a de facto standard laptop design untill now. It was shown
by it’s placing of keyboard, palm rest, and trackball.

2.2 Definition of Anti-Scratch Product

Every thing that is important to have the protection to keep it from
damage. The protection can be formed of layer or the material to be mixed with
that important object. All of them is used to keep of external interference for the
important objects. One of external interference is friction that can make a scratch.
That scratch can spoils the beauty of the object. So, that object must be protected
by scratch protector, is called anti-scratch.
A substance to protect certain parts from scratches is called anti-scratches.
Anti-scratches is one of the innovations to protect the favorite items or something
that want to be protected from the scratches. Commonly, anti-scratch used as the
top layer of something that want to be protected. There is also a mixture of
materials used. Thus, if rubbing against the other things or materials, the objects
that want to be protected is not exposed to scratches. Those scratches would be in
an anti-scratches layer. But, sometimes those scratches is very deep, they can
damage the anti-scratches layers and they is scratching the protected items. So, the
materials of anti-scratches must be strong to keep the protect items.
For example, the objects using a anti-scratch are glasses, teflon, LCD,
gadget, and the others. In this report will be limited to discussion of the using
anti-scratches for gadget only. Anti-scratches for gadget are used to protect the
consumer’s favorite gadgets. Commonly, the part of want to be protected are
screen and body of gadget. Anti-scratches which is on the screen gadget is called
screen protector and on the body gadget is called case.

2.3 Types of Anti-Scratch for Gadget

There are three kinds of gadgets are mobile phone (handphone), tablet, and
laptop. Now, handphone and tablet have been classified into the smart phone.
They also use touch screen technology in operated. So, the screen must be
maintained both its subtlety.

2.3.1 Screen Protector

A screen protector is an additional sheet of material that can be attached
to a screen of an electronic device and protect it against physical damage. The
gadgets are already using touch screen technology, so need to attention to the
clarity of the display on the screen.
Types of screen protector for gadget :
a. Protectors that are clear and have a glossy finish.
Clear screen protector is a screen protector which is smooth,
transparently, and has optimal clearity for viewing on gadget screen. The
function is just protect the screen from scratches.

limit the user’s perspective on the screen. Just users who have 0° angle to the
screen are able to see the display clearly, so the other people who have more
than 20° angle can not see what’s on the display. Thus, the user’s privacy can
be protected.

c. Protectors that have a mirror coating.

This screen protector use materials that have reflection like a mirror.
When the display is turned off, the screen protector become a mirror.
d. Protectors that have an anti-glare coating.
This screen protector is designed to reduce on the amount of light that
reflects of the display. This light or glare can be very fatiguing to user’s eyes.
Further more, it is can reduces the colors, contrast, and sharpnesss of the
display. Thus, anti-glare can makes more pleasant for users to see the display
for a long time.

e. Protectors that have an oleophobic coating to reduce fingerprints

Screen protector with an oleophobic can help reduce the attachment and
appearance of fingerprints. It is making easier to clean without the build up of
grease that can lead to a rainbow sheen effect for screen gadget.

f. Protectors that filter UV

This type of screen protector is used to screen out UV rays. UV rays
come from sun light. This screen protector can prevent sun light mingled on the
screen, so when the screen exposed with sunlight, the screen become not glare
and the user can see the screen clearly.

g. Protectors with a matte finish

This type of screen protector is transparent and hubcap.
h. Protectors with impact protection and shatterproof properties.
The protector is scratch resistant, stress resistant, drop resistant and a has
special self healing capability with dissipative functioning embodied.
Shatterproof uses the physics concept of dissipation, dissipation embodies the
concept of a dynamical system where important mechanical modes, such as
waves or oscillations, lose energy over time. shatterproof does exactly the same
to protect devices from drops and shocks, drops and stress which wireless
devices usually do not survive.

2.3.2 Case
When a body of gadget is contacted with a rough surface, it is can make
a scratch. So, the body of gadget must be protected also. Here is an overview of
some the best types of cases to protect gadgets.
a. Polycarbonate Cases
Polycarbonate is type of tough, durable plastic used in some gadget
cases today. Polycarbonate is the same material used in bulletproof windows,
so user can be assured it will offer maximum protection for user’s gadget.
Many polycarbonate gadget manufacturers also offer additives or optional
coatings to prevent scratching or degradation from UV ray exposure.
Advantages of Polycarbonate:
 Polycarbonate is a thick type of plastic that is very strong.
 It is durable.
 The polycarbonate is designed to resist the impact and disperse the
shock of the fall.
 The best polycarbonate gadget cases even have an inner silicone or
fabric lining for added shock protection.
Disadvantages of Polycarbonate :
 Polycarbonate is prone to changing color with prolonged exposure to
sunlight.
 Polycarbonate tends to scratch more easily than plastic or leather.

UNIVERSITAS INDONESIA
11

 Polycarbonate is more slippery than other materials like silicone, so it

be hard to grip tightly.
 Polycarbonate is more likely to acquire fingerprints, grease and sweat
than a softer case, making the phone look less polished than with other
types of cases.

b. Plastic Cases
Plastic cases offer protection from bumps and scratches. Plastic
cases are a durable and inexpensive way to protect gadget from potential chips
and cracks. Hard plastic cases can help save gadget from cracking or breaking
by absorbing the shock of a fall.
Advantages of Plastic Gadget Cases:
 Absorb the shock of a fall or drop
 Easy to hold or slide in a pocket or purse
 Affordable and offered at all price points
 Sold everywhere
 Allow user to express their personal style, with simple or fun colors,
shapes and designs.
Disadvantages of Plastic Gadget Cases:
 It is less durable and less stylish than leather or metal.
 It is a rigid material.
 Plastic cases are typically not waterproof, so they would not protect
gadget if it falls in water.

c. Carbon Fiber Cases

Carbon fiber is a strong, lightweight material, so cases made from
it offer a high level of protection against damage. Carbon fiber cases are ideal
for protecting gadgets from falls on concrete or hard tile — falls which can
result in cracked screens and other major damage. Carbon fiber offers greater
protection than plastic cases and generally is more expensive than plastic.
Advantages of Carbon Fiber Smartphone Cases:
 Carbon fiber is durable

UNIVERSITAS INDONESIA
12

 Carbon fiber is also lightweight

 Carbon fiber cases are attractive and come in an array of stylish colors
and designs
Disadvantages of Carbon Fiber Smartphone Cases:
 Carbon fiber is more expensive than other types

d. Silicone Cases
Silicone is another popular material used for making gadget
cases. Silicone cases are flexible skins which offer great protection against
low-impact drops by helping absorb the impact of a fall to reduce damage to
user gadget. These cases also offer protection from scratches and minor dings.
Silicone cases come in a variety of colors and designs and are perfect for
protecting them from life’s everyday bumps and damage.

e. Metal Cases
Metal cases, sometimes made of aluminum, are hard and sturdy.
Metal cases offer protection from falls and daily scratches and chips to help
preserve the appearance of user gadget. Metal cases generally come out on top
of plastic cases in terms of protection. The hard exterior of a metal case would
not crack, break, or chip like a plastic case can.
.
f. Leather Cases
Leather cases are a popular aesthetic choice for gadget protection.
Though leather cases can protect gadgets from scratches and chips, they do not
provide the strongest protection when it comes to dropping user’s gadget. A
leather case may be right for user if users are only looking for minimal
protection from daily wear.
From slide-in pouches and leather flip-books to leather-covered snap-on
cases, the variety of leather cases on the market is astounding.

2.4 Development of Anti-Scratch Product

2.4.1 History
Since the first generation of electronic device that uses screen, anti-scratch
product had undergone many development. At first, the major function of this
product was to protect the most vulnerable part of the device which is its screen
(screen protector). The first screen protector was designed and patented by
Herbert Schlegel in 1968 for use on television screens. The present invention
relates generally to the portable television receiver art, and, more particularly, to
such receivers particularly suited for operation in locations where there is a large
amount of local environmental brightness, for example, during daylight with the
screen exposed to sunlight. Another object of the present invention is to provide
an improvement in television receivers which yields proper contrast to the screen
of a television receiver and without adding appreciable expenditure to the cost of
producing such receivers. A further object of the invention is to provide a device
of the character described for restoring to the screen dark picture areas which, due
to large local environmental brightness, have lost their relative effect. The design
of this screen protector is very simple and easily made.
The first generation of screen protectors were made from very thin films
based on the concept that an extra layer between the two surfaces (screen and
stylus) would provide the needed protection to prolong the life of the device.
These screen protectors come in packs of 10 to 20 protectors and are hand-cut by
the end consumer to fit the specific device enabling the end user to fit them to
different devices. Such screen protectors, while offering extra protection, did not
completely fill the need in the marketplace. They peeled off easily and they
scratched almost as easily as the screens, causing the protector to be replaced
often.
The newer generation of screen protectors are made from a much more
durable film and are designed to be a more permanent part of the gadget which
they protect. The material is a urethane-based film which is a little thicker than
traditional screen protectors (0.008 inches compared to 0.005 or 0.003), but the
film is hardly noticeable once installed. Second-generation screen protectors on
the other hand, although more expensive, offer better long-term protection and are

UNIVERSITAS INDONESIA
14

generally made specifically for each individual device, providing the user with a
better fitting protector.
With the fast development of technology, electronic devise available now
generally include a display screen for performing/displaying an operation state of
the device. However, a liquid crystal screen generally gets scratched easily. Thus
a screen surface is applied with a screen protector to prevent the screen from
getting scratched. The screen protector has been widely used in electronic devices
such as mobile phones, cameras or portable multimedia players.
Most of screen protectors in prior generation are in a single-layer structure
made from `transparent plastic material. The bottom of the single layer structure
includes an adhesive layer covered with a piece of release film.

2.4.2 Screen Protector Nowadays

Along the devlopment of technology, screen protector not only works as anti
scratch coating but also have been built for enhanced function based on the human
needs. Those things affect the number of layer in the protector. If the prior
protector only use single layer, the additional function makes it become multi
layer.
While being used for outdoor applications in daylight, LCD screens of
electronic devices are difficult to see clearly due to reflection. Besides reduced
visibility and blurred images, users' eyes are tired and reading becomes difficult.
Other physical signs include eye strains and headaches. To solve those problems,
most screen protector nowadays have anti-glare and anti-reflection properties.
If the screen protector is not laying flat during application of the screen
protector, air bubbles are left between the screen and the screen protector. Then
use a tool to carefully remove all the air bubbles. When there are air bubbles you
can't get out, pull up a part of the screen protector without removing it fully and
post again. The screen protector applied smoothly with no bubbles is used to
protect the screen from dust and scratches. Furthermore, the screen protector
might not go on smoothly, with wrinkles trapped. Peel the screen protector off and
try again. To solve those problems, the developers builds screen protector that
does not generate bubble either during application or usage.

2.4.3 Nano Technology Intervention

After nanotechnology took part in the development of screen protector,
people now can develop engineered plastic that can provides superior scratch
protection and can make the coated device survive from huge impact. The
strengthen engineered material in nano part can be used as a coat to absorb the
impact so the gadget below that protector will keep safe. Improvement of nano
technology also helps the developer build the oleophobic coating system that help
the screen protector become resistant from annoying fingerprint smudges and
makes it very easy to clean.

CHAPTER 3
COSTUMER’S NEEDS IDENTIFICATION

3.1 Interpretation of Needs

The methods of survey that we do to understand costumer’s needs are
interview and questionnaire. The respondents come from different background of
age, gender, occupation, and anti-scratch is used. We interview to seven people as
distributors of anti-scratch to know specification of anti-scratch types that are sold
in the market. Those disributors are main respondents. Other than distributors, we
get 73 peoples with different background. From these results, we can be grouped
to get costumer’s needs. The result of survey can be looked in this below.
a. Gender and Occupation of Respondents
We surveyed 73 of respondents that consist was 56% of male and
44% of female. This result will be related to our target market to both of
male and female consumers. Their occupation is different. Based on our
survey results, occupation of respondents are 59% as student, 11% as
independent employee, 9% as governmental employee, 11% as
entrepreneur, and 10% of the others (housewife, animator, labor, and
academic). The result is desribed in figure A.1 and A.2 on appendix A.
b. The Types of Gadget That are Had by Respondents
We asked to respondent to ensure what they are user of gadget. If
they are user, we will know what they use anti-scratch or not. This is very
important to asked to respondent because if they are not user, so they can
not complete to next question. Thus, we searched respondent that use
many more gadget.
Based on our survey, all of respondents have one or more gadget.
Types of gadget that we asked like are handphone, tablet, and laptop. Total
of gadgets that are had respondents are 113 gadgets. Those consist are
62% of respondents who had handphone, 4% of respondents who had
tablet, and 34% of respondents who had laptop. This percentage can be
looked in figure A.3 (Appendix A).

16

UNIVERSITAS INDONESIA
17

Based on figure A.4 (Appendix A), the respondents that use the
most types of gadgets are handphones. Those percentages of gadgets that
are often used are 84% of handphone, 11% of tablet, and 5% of laptop.
c. The Intensity and The Usage of Respondents Using Gadgets
The average intensity of the using their gadget is high. That is can
be looked on Appendix A that the most percentage of the using gadgets is
over than 7 hours per day. Thus, we can get a information that their gadget
have higher chance to be scratched.
The high intensity of using gadgets can be seen from the frequent
using of those gadgets are used for what. From the result in the chart
(Figure 6.) are shown 41% of gadgets are used to communicate.
Additionally, 27% is used as browsing. So mostly, those gadgets are used
for communicating and browsing.
d. The User’s Anti-Scratch
We surveyed to respondent about how importance level using anti-
scracth for their gadget. Mostly, their answers are important and very
important, each are 48% and 45%. Based on all of respondents’ answers,
92% of them use anti-scratches, either on screen or on body of gadgets.
This percentage is the most. So, they still need anti-scratch to protect their
gadgets from scratches. These are can be shown on figure A.7. and figure
A.8.
e. Form of Products
From 92% of respondent that answer is use anti-scratch for their
gadget, we also asked about types of anti-scratch that they are used. Are
on screen, body, or both of them? According chart in figure 15, 53% of
respondents that use anti-scratch answered to use anti-scratch on screen
only. They are use screen protector. Also, there are 36% that use both of
screen protector and case.
f. Price Range of Anti-Scratch Product
Based on our survey, the figure A.10 and A.11 shows that
variations of price to buy an anti-scratch. For price range of screen
protector, the most respondents bought screen protector are more

UNIVERSITAS INDONESIA
18

expensive that 50,000 IDR (39%). For price range of case, the most
respondents bought case are 50,000 – 99,999 IDR. From the results
obtained, the price range is not significantly different. The purchase price
of anti-scratch is still variaty, but this is still relatively cheap.
g. The Reasons to Use Anti-Scratch Product
Mostly, the reasons of respondents are quality. From the result
obtained, there are 83% that choose quality of anti-scratch, 12% of cost,
2% of brands, and 3% of the others like function and design. Anti-
scratches’ quality are still become number one to determine that will be
purchased.

3.2 Costumer’s Needs Grouping and Ranking

The next step is to determine the needs by ranking and grouping the
customer’s needs. The needs are coming from customer’s opinion about the
existing anti-scratch product and their hope about future product. Then, all are
grouped into some category based on their similarity and then also be rated based
on their nature. The purpose is to ease in identifying the needs and to determine
which need has to be considered and fulfilled first.
The needs ranking based on the following categories:
1. Undesirable
2. Not important
3. Nice to have
4. Highly desirable
5. Essential

CHAPTER 4
PRODUCT SPECIFICATIONS

After finding what consumers needs, the next step is specify the product.
The purpose of making the specification of the product is to quantify the needs
and convert the needs into a units that can be measured. So that we know what
would our product looks like. There are some steps to get product specification.
Those are listing of metrics, benchmarking, and listing of specification. Below
are some steps to specify our product.

4.1. List of Metrics

Grading the needs with scientific parameters is the way to get the
specification of the product. Then we directly get the metrics unit which is the
unit of specification. Here is list of metrics for anti-scratch on gadget product.

Table 4.1. List of Metrics for Anti-Scratch on Gadget Product

From this table, we could conclude that some needs could have same
specification. Some of the needs can’t be measured in an exact number. In order
to make a right spec for that ‘needs’, we change it into subjective with y/n as a
unit. We also will do a benchmarking step to determine the superiority of our
products when it’s being compared with the existing product.

UNIVERSITAS INDONESIA
23

We try to know how well the existing product satisfy consumers by

measuring the metrics of competing products using our own list of specifications,
so that we could assemble the product’s information properly. See also the matrix
of needs and metrics at Appendix B in the end of this book. The matrix will show
us whether all needs have had specifications or not.

4.2 Benchmarking
Benchmarking is a way to determine the superiority of our products to be
the production of other products that similar and have been producing in the
market. The necessity to conduct benchmarking is vital, because we will produce
a product that must be able to compete with existing products in the market
overally. This way, we can market a product which will be preferred by public
compared to other similar products, or competitor products.
Along with the development of technology, the function of screen
protector become widely expanded. The are many screen protector product sale on
market with various additional function. But we can simplify them become 2 kind
based on its material, glass and plastic. We also benchmark for both expensive
and cheap protector as comparation. We choose these brand because of several
analysis. Here is the product we benchmark
1. Sir Lancelot's Armor Holy Grail
This product is made from tampered glass, the same material as
bulletproof glass. So the hardness and the strength of this product is undoubtable.
It has clear surface with high transparency. But the expensive cost of this product
makes it only suit for materially wealth guy. Sir Lancelot's Armor Holy Grail
protector’s great feel, its durability and design, make it awarded for
TopTenREVIEWS Gold Award winner.
2. Zagg Invisible Shield
ZAGG invisibleSHIELD screen protectors are well known for a reason.
These screen protectors are durable, go on smooth, have self-healing qualities and
come with a lifetime guarantee. Although these screen protectors feel a little
rubbery, they resist oil, allow your finger to glide along the screen, and reduce

UNIVERSITAS INDONESIA
24

glare. For these reasons and more, the ZAGG invisibleSHIELD series is awarded
as TopTenREVIEWS Silver Award winner.
3. Good Gadget Glass Guard
This screen protectors are made from tampered glass that have similar
protection as Sir Lancelot's Armor Holy Grail, but with additional anti glare
system that reduce eye constrain
4. YI-YI Protective Screen Protector
Ordinary screen protector made from PET. This product seems only
designed for minimum scratch protection, but this is the cheapest product
compared to other benchmark product.
We make two kinds of benchmarking table, the first one is the
benchmarking result based on needs and benchmarking result based on
specification. We do this because there are differences between needs and
specifications. Benchmarking result based on needs gives us analysis to
understand how well the existance product fits the customer satisfaction as we
know that list of needs show us the list of things we must satisfy to the customer.
While benchmarking result based on specifications gives information about how
well the existence products fit the needs of customer. The tables of benchmarking
can be looked on Appendix C.
From the benchmarking table, we can see that there’s huge differences
between Performance group and Retailing group. The high performance product
have really expensive cost and inversely, low cost products have really poor
performance. The two of benchmarking product are made from tampered glass
that are very strong against impact and scratch still can’t guard the screen from
dust and impurities, despite of their high cost.

4.3 Product Specifications

Product specification is the first concept of our product. The value of each
specification is based on ideal and marginal value, while marginal and ideal value
are based on existence product or patent. The product sprecification can be seen in
Table D.1 and the references of ideal and marginal value are listed in Table D.2.

UNIVERSITAS INDONESIA
CHAPTER 5
CONCLUSION

Based on the customer’s needs elaboration and benchmark with existing anti-
scratch product, we can conclude several points:
1. Nowadays anti scratch is a familiar product in Indonesia, so that there are a lot
of gadget users that use it.
2. Over 90% gadget user said that it is important to protect their gadget. But,
existing anti scratch doesn’t give satisfaction to the users.
3. Customers want a new innovation of anti scratch that is more resistant to
rough surface and sharps objects, doesn’t reduce the sensitivity, sticks strongly
to the screen, and doesn’t show up the bubble.
