Plants

Hello everyone, I am Vivi the Sunflower! I feel like singing today!

Roots, stem, leaves and flowers,

Leaves and flowers, (head, shoulder,
Roots and stem and leaves and flowers. knees and toes tune)
Roots, stem, leaves and flowers,
Leaves and flowers.

What am I singing about?

Well, I’m singing about the parts of the plants! Plants have roots,
stem, leaves and flower. Ohh, and the seed too.

Did any of you know what is the job of each part of the plant is?

Let’s start with the seed. The seed contains the stored food and
the embryo.

Now, what is embryo? It’s not the human baby, but it is a baby
plant that will grow if the seed is planted.

However, not all plants come from seeds. There is bulb, a round
underground bud like in an onion.

There is a tuber, a thick, fat part of underground stem. Potato is a

tuber!

There is also a cutting, which is a young branch from a plant like in

daffodil.

Some plants grow from spores. Spores are teeny tiny seedlike
parts.

Did you know that we eat seed?

I have eaten peas in a pod, and my personal favourite is corn on
the cob. Yummy!

How about the roots? The job is to help the plant gather nutrients
from the soil and water.

Did you know that we eat roots too? Sounds gross but we do eat
carrots and radishes!

Let’s move on to the stem. It is used to transport water and

nutrient to the rest of the plant.

Are there any stems that we eat? Yes of course, we eat celery and
asparagus.

Now we are onto the leaves. Leaves help plant make food
through photosynthesis.

What is photosynthesis?

Photosynthesis is when the leaves take in sunlight and carbon

dioxide to make food. The food is called glucose. Plants breathe
out oxygen, the air we need.

That is a major reason why plants are so important to us.

Are there any leaves that we eat? We eat lettuce and cabbage.

What about the flowers? Flowers help the plant make seeds. Some
flowers make sticky yellow powder called pollen. Insect will carry
the pollen from one flower to another. That is when the seeds will
form.

So my friends, now you know about each part of the plants. I

hope next time you see a plant, you don’t pluck it.
That’s all from me. Thank you
