PRACTICAL

TITLE:- PRACTICAL TRAINING OF A TWO PIESE SLEEVE ON ALUMINIUM

CONDUCTOR STEEL REINFORCE (ACSR).

INTRODUCION:-

This procedure describes the method to apply a 2 piece tension sleeve on

Aluminum Conductor Steel Reinforce (ACSR) while the circuit is de-energized. The procedure,
together with the application of relevant safety rules and rigging information will ensure the work is
carried out safely and efficiently.

T&P REQUIRED:-

 Pilot Rope
 Hand Line
 Press and Dies
 Pump and Compressor
 Electric Generator.
 Chain Hoist (According to use)
 Conductor Grip 2 No
 Wire Brush
 Ratchet Bolt Cutter and Hacksaw
 Portable Ground Device
 Grip All clamp stick + Earth Leads
 Basket with required T&P

PERSONAL PROTECTIVE EQUIPMENT REQUIRED (PPE):-

 Line man Body Harness

 Safety Hat
 Boots

MATERIAL:-

 2 Piece Sleeve.
 Aluminum Joint Compound
 Steel Wool
PROCEDURE:-

1. First of all obtain PTW on concerned circuit.

2. Pray to GOD for successful work and did tail board conference.
3. Took up the hand line with the help of pilot rope and install it on most convenient position on X
arm brace.
4. Take up the earth set and install it after teasing the line with the help of grip all.

CLEANING ALUMINUM:-
Aluminum must be well cleaned to ensure a good electrical connection.
For single layer ACSR we simply clean the out side of the wire with steel wool or a wire brush, then
wipe clean and coat with Aluminum jointing compound. For multi-layered wire we must unravel the
outside strands and clean the inner core plus clean the unraveled strands with steel wool or a wire
brush then wipe clean coat with Aluminum jointing compound. When cleaning old and very dirty
conductor they must first be cleaned with a lye solution by dipping in a (lye is sodium hydroxide) lye
pot then cleaned as a new conductor. The inside of the sleeve joint must also be cleaned and coat with
Aluminum jointing compound.

MAKING A JOINT:-

a) Install a portable grounding device (jumper) on both side of the conductor where the sleeve
join is to be installed.
b) Install a chain hoist and grip on the conductor and take weight of the conductor on the chain
hoist.
c) For a two piece sleeve you must trim the Aluminum strands of ¾” to 1” more then the length of
the steel sleeve. This is done to allow for expansion for the Aluminum on the steel core. You
must slip the outer aluminum sleeve on first; then press the steel core; cover with Aluminum
jointing compound; press the outer aluminum sleeve. You must overlap the die presses by a
maximum of 25 outside to maintain the sleeve strength. Also, rotate the sleeve ¼ turn with
each press to keep the sleeve straight.
d) After the sleeve has been installed, remove the tools. Ensure the sleeve is straight with no
bends before removing the ground.
5. Cancel the PTW and normalize the system.
SAFETY PRECAUTION:-

1. PTW must be obtain on required circuit.

2. Approved T&P and PPE must be used.
3. All T&P must be checked before using.
4. Line must be teased before applying grounds.
5. Always remember to check the size of the dies in the press before use. Also check to make sure
you have the proper size sleeve for the conductor.
6. While apply the ground first apply at ground end and then on conductor, and when removing
first remove from line and then remove from ground end.
7. All insulators sockets and key must be checked.
8. Good verbal communication is required of all crew members.
