What is GSM?

Short for Global System for Mobile Communications, one of the leading digital cellular systems. GSM uses
narrowband TDMA, which allows eight simultaneous calls on the same radio frequency.

GSM was first introduced in 1991. As of the end of 1997, GSM service was available in more than 100
countries and has become the de facto standard in Europe and Asia.

Answer
Global System for Mobile (GSM) encompases a set of second generation (2G) cellular
standards for digitally encoding and transmitting voice over mobile telephony
systems. GSM uses frequency, time, and space division multiplexing to conserve
radio spectrum.

A key differentiator versus other 2G systems such as TDMA and CDMA is that GSM
based systems include a Subscriber Identity Module (SIM), a smart card CPU that
provides a globally unique subscriber ID allowing international roaming in 150+
countries.

Many GSM-based 2G and 2.5G handsets (mobile phones) also include a J2ME
implementation, and as such are an important target for J2ME developers.

Definition: Considered the most advanced digital cellular technology, extremely

popular in Europe and Asia. GSM networks are leaders in many typically "digital"
services including the Short Message Service (SMS), Over the air (OTA) configuration
and GSM positionning. Considered its technology and presence both in Americas and
the rest of the world, GSM is in a good position for global roaming and many new
GSM phones are called "global phones", since they can be used in virtually any
country. The SIM card ("Subscriber Identification Module") is also a unique and
essential component of GSM phones
