Task 7: The size and shape of the industry

For this task you will need to review the latest UKIE (UK Interactive
Entertainment) Industry report (November 2017).
Focussing specifically on the UK games market (Pages 33 - 36

Task 1 The size and shape of the industry

Having read and processed the information provided, describe the size and
shape of the Games Industry in the UK.
Your write-up should answer the following questions:
 Do you think jobs in the games sector are increasing or decreasing?
Why?
I think jobs in the games sector are increaing becasuse the art team
alone is 2.3 times larger from 2017 than in 2012.
 Where are jobs concentrated geographically, in terms of the UK?
In te UK the games sector jobs are concetrated mostly on London, Cardif
and Birmingham.
 What proportion of freelancers are there in this industry?
In 2015 freelancers represented 16% of the game sector workforce.
 From a personal perspective, are there any equality and diversity
challenges presented by this sub-sector?
Personally I feel the there could be a better diversity like testing the
people in the interview instead of just reading the cv (or whatever)
because representation means very little its what the person can
actually do.

Task 2 Skills gaps

Now look at Powering Up: Manifesto. This is a a series of recommendations
made to the Government in May 2017 outlining what can be done to enhance
and protect the UK games industry.
Review the 10 key recommendations being made:
For each of the 10 points write a brief summary as to how this will help to
boost the industry, and the potential rationale for each recommendation
 Within the manifesto report the follwing research is presented;
‘According to a recent industry-wide survey, 61% of respondent games
companies rely on highly skilled international talent, with EU nationals
making up on average 34% of these companies’ headcount’. – What are
your thoughts on this, and which of the manifesto points do you feel
will have the most impact in addressing this issue?
1. This will improve the games industry because by being more flexible
with the levy funds the companies can spend more money on making
better games or improving exciting ones.
2. This will boost the industry by making sure everyone meets the
standards needed of educational minimal, at least.
3. This will improve the industry by prioritising criteria of importance that
must be met.
4. This will boost the work ethic of the industies by relieving stress of the
non UK employees.
5. This will improve the industry prioritising data and after leaving the EU
making sure said data stays safe.
6. This boosts the industry by making sure the trade agreement does not
diverge and remove market access.
7. This boosts the industry by funding partnerships and maximise export
value.
8. This improves the industry by funding public agencies to suport the
coordinated development.
9. This improves the industry by protecting the cultual differences in
games?
10. This booosts the industry by speeding up game connectivity and
reducing lag time.

Task 3 Conclusion
Use all the information above to write a conclusion to your studies for this half
term. Things you might want to consider:
 What sort of job you would like to pursue
 Whether you would go to university, an apprenticeship or work your
way up
 Which skills it would be useful to gain, given the skills gaps in your
chosen sector
 What sort of working pattern you would be most likely to follow
 Where you could/should go, geographically, to further your career
 Whether or not your research has confirmed or altered your original
plans

I would like to pursue a job in coding or creative arts for a games company I
would like to achieve a place in an apprenticeship. I would have to gain a
greater ability to speak to people. After college I would most likely follow the
pattern of a full time job. If I get an apprenticeship where I would like to work
(Rare) I would most likely move to Twycross. I think this research has altered
my plans because originally I wanted to start my own buisness and go to
university.
