GE’s Growth Strategy: The Immelt Initiative (10%)

1. How difficult was the task Immelt faced when he assumed the CEO role in 2001?
Any imperative changes? Any incentives to maintain the past operation?

2. Was Immelt’s approach to taking charge different from Jack Welch’s first few years
after becoming CEO in 1981? Did they face similar tasks?

3. What were the major differences in strategic vision between Immelt and Welch?

4. Would you have proposed a similar strategy like Immelt? Why or why not?

5. How well was Immelt implementing his strategy? What were his greatest achievements?

Robert Mondavi and the Wine Industry (10%)

1. Evaluate the structure of the global wine industry. How and why is that structure changing?

2. Conduct an industry analysis for the wine business that Robert Mondavi is facing.
Based on your analysis, which “world” (new or old) is more attractive?

3. What threats did Robert Mondavi face? How would you rank/prioritize them?

4. Why were large alcoholic beverage firms such as Diageo, Foster’s, and Allied
Domecq entering the premium wine business? Do their strategies make sense to you?
What advantages or disadvantages does Mondavi have relative to them?

5. What were the strategic alternatives for Mondavi? What would you recommend to
Mondavi’s management?
