BANKING
White plan
There seemed, at first, to be a way to get such convertible
currency. Harry Dexter White, the chief adviser to US treasury
secretary Henry Morgenthau, framed a scheme for the
purchase of these balances, in stages, by the new fund to be
set up after the war, the subsequent injection of liquidity, and
re-purchase.
Hope betrayed
So, as India’s
representative,
B.K. Nehru
wound up
India’s
negotiations in
London for the
transfer of the
balances he was
mystified by
what his British
counterpart
murmured to
him.

(August 15,

your dollars’,” Nehru has written. Nehru did not understand.
What if?

Excellent article. Unfortunately nothing has changed. The Anglophile
and the apologist mindset pervades our political class, bureaucracy
and academia even today. Some Indians are increasingly
uncomfortable with these exposes, more recently from Shashi
Tharoors's book. The opposition parties have always been overjoyed
by negative stories about Modi in the Economist, the Guardian and
NYT, so called bastions of liberal media but with very thinly disguised
contempt for the Third World. Social scientists from India consider
their guest articles in these publications as a validation of
international repute and stature, even when these articles diminish
India because of their ideological hatred for the party in power. A
former PM had to this to say at Oxford "it is possible for an Indian
Prime Minister to assert that India’s experience with Britain had its
beneficial consequences too." He was receiving an honorary degree,
that should have been the right moment to use his moral authority to
preach a bit, and not be flattered to make ingratiating remarks. Today,
historians are bringing out more and more facts which puts our
colonial period in the right perspective. Let the games begin.
