RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN INTEGRAL CALCULUS AND

ENVIRONMENTAL ENGINEERING
Yeferson Stiven Méndez Torres1

With the passage of time and the development of man, a branch of mathematics is
born focused on the process of integration or anti-derivation, called integral calculus,
which is created to improve methods of measuring areas located under curved lines
or surfaces, First used by scientists like Archimedes, René Descartes, Isaac Newton,
Gottfried Leibniz and Isaac Barrow; The latter's investigations together with those of
Newton originated the Fundamental Theorem of Integral Calculus, which proposes
that derivation and integration are inverse techniques. This is a very common
process in engineering, mathematics and some other branches of science, and is
mainly used to calculate areas and volumes of regions and solids of revolution. As
for its use in different engineering, such as in environmental engineering, which was
born thanks to the industrial development of populations, and therefore with the need
not only to control, but also to avoid the pollution of the planet caused mainly by the
production of different solid and liquid waste generated by the factories, through the
creation and practice of environmental projects that relate to all aspects of society.
One of the most common examples of the application of integral calculus in
environmental engineering is the determination of the amount of water passing
through a river in hectoliters annually, so that we could build hydraulic works such
as dams or aqueducts, or Causes of increase and decrease of the flow. The integral
calculation can also be used to calculate the volume of water consumed in a
population's hours, and the rate at which the greenhouse gases are emitted to the
atmosphere. Basically the environmental engineer uses integral calculus to solve
most of the unknowns in his daily life, we would not be engineers if we did not have
those numerical tools for problem solving.
In the design of residual plants, the integral calculation and the defined integral can
be used to find the exact area of uneven terrain, where the distribution of spaces,
machinery and workplaces would be facilitated, however, with the mitigation of waste
Solids and liquids.
Every day a different challenge for any environmental engineer, where the important
thing will be the application of concepts and knowledge acquired during their training
process, the integrals as an aid to the unknown and solution as environmental
management controls give us a way to summarize data And focus strictly on the
fundamentals, that is, simplify experimental procedures and summarize them in
mathematical solutions.
In conclusion, since its inception the calculation has been generated to solve strictly
everyday problems, that is, with this we have been able to give place to the benefits
and amenities that we enjoy today and that have certainly had a solution through

this, in engineering Environmental, more than anything, contributes to the
management, population control, determination of volumes and delimitation of areas
with which social development and industrial increase have been facilitated; of
course with a responsible use of the environment.
Not only is it used for environmental use, integral calculus has a large number of
applications related to different areas of study, which does not mean that it is
separately, moreover, each contributes to the other for the consolidation of a more
complete system and with less possibility of error or negligence.
