INTRODUCTION
Civil engineering is a professional engineering discipline that deals with the design,
construction, and maintenance of the of the physical and natural built environment. When they
heard the word civil engineering the things that come up to their mind is the one who build an
infrastructure. Civil engineers are conceiving, design, build, supervise, operate, construct, and
maintain infrastructure projects and system in public and private sector, including roads,
building, airports, tunnels, dams, bridges, and system for water supply and sewage treatment.
Environmental science emerged from the fields of natural history and medicine during the
Enlightenment. Today it provides an integrated, quantitative, and interdisciplinary approach to
the study of environmental systems. Environmental studies incorporate more of the social
sciences for understanding human relationships, perceptions and policies towards the
environment. Environmental engineering focuses on design and technology for improving
environmental quality in every aspect. This term paper aims to discover how civil engineering
deal with the environmental science.

Civil engineering

Engineering is the intelligent application of knowledge that gain in various fields such as
science, mathematics, economics, and practical experience in various fields of practical interest.
Engineering helps to invent, design, build, maintain, and improve all types of structures,
machine, devices, system, materials, and processes that helpful to our society. One of the
engineering disciplines is civil engineering. Civil Engineering is an engineering discipline that
deals with design, construction and maintenance of public works such as buildings, roads,
bridges, water and energy system as well as public facilities like ports, railways, and airports.

They are also responsible to health and safety of public and environment through infrastructures.
It not about constructing infrastructure, civil engineering has a lot of specialization that will help
to improve our economy and our country.

Environmental Science

Environmental science is an interdisciplinary academic field that integrates physical,

biological and information sciences, including ecology, biology, physics, chemistry, plant
science, zoology, mineralogy, oceanography, limnology, soil science, geology and physical
geography, and atmospheric science. In order to study of the environment, and the solution of
environmental problems. Environmental science emerged from the fields of natural history and
medicine during the Enlightenment. Today it provides an integrated, quantitative, and
interdisciplinary approach to the study of environmental systems. Environmental studies
incorporate more of the social sciences for understanding human relationships, perceptions and
policies towards the environment. Environmental engineering focuses on design and technology
for improving environmental quality in every aspect.

4
Environmental scientists study subjects like the understanding of earth processes,
evaluating alternative energy systems, pollution control and mitigation, natural resource
management, and the effects of global climate change. Environmental issues almost always
include an interaction of physical, chemical, and biological processes. Environmental scientists
bring a system approach to the analysis of environmental problems. Key elements of an effective
environmental scientist include the ability to relate space, and time relationships as well as
quantitative analysis.

Importance of Environmental Science to Civil engineering

Civil engineers change the world. They influence people’s lives more than many other
professions, because infrastructural facilities and buildings are an essential part of every
civilization. How civil engineers will live tomorrow is inspired by their imagination and
knowledge. Civil engineers analyze, model and realize. They create safe airports, network
settlements, design water supply concepts and sewer systems, restore rivers or set up wind power
plants on the open sea. Today, civil engineers and environmental scientists are creatively and
innovatively mastering the rapidly growing demands of business, culture, environmental
influences or new materials.

The individual institutes are responsible for research, which develops on the basis of the
society's current issues, each with its own focal points, and implements them either alone or in
cooperation in international competition. The research is primarily basic research and is
supplemented by commissions from the industry. The studies at department impart the entire
range of engineering methods and skills that enable our graduates to make responsible, qualified
and flexible decisions and take action on a scientific basis. The range of services is completed by
excellently equipped laboratories, which form the basis of numerous projects.

Similarities and Differences of Environmental Engineering and Environmental Science

Environmental science and environmental engineering share some basic similarities. To

begin, and perhaps most importantly, both areas of study are concerned with the natural
environment and its relationship with the human world. Both environmental scientists and
engineers focus on data gathered from the natural environment, particularly data on the past and

5
future effects of human activity and its impact, in order to devise and implement solutions to a
variety of issues.

Beyond that, however, these paths begin to diverge, although it’s fair to say they are
complementary and may share the same ultimate goal or goals. Like any scientist, an
environmental scientist is generally tasked with performing research for a specific project,
gathering data provided by the natural environment focusing on a certain issue, such as
environmental degradation and the effects of human activity on a given area. An environmental
scientist may then analyze this data, and further provide a recommendation to be implemented in
order to facilitate change or enact future benefits.

Here, the environmental engineer steps in. Once provided with data, an analysis, and a
recommendation by a scientist, an engineer can begin using his or her knowledge of both
engineering and environmental science in order to apply it toward a plan and solution. His or her
actions could include planning new infrastructure to limit the effects of human activity on a
specific space, or even shaping a plan to ensure that a given area is rapidly developed to allow
for human use.

Ultimately, these two fields of study can be largely understood and differentiated through
their related terms: science and engineering. Specifically, an environmental scientist will work
like any other scientist, gathering and analyzing a set of data to provide answers to certain
questions. And, in contrast, an environmental engineer will utilize a host of engineering
principles to create a plan of action using information provided by the scientist. Of course, these
two fields of study are both concerned with the same end goal of answering questions or
providing solutions to problems related to the environment, which again highlights the
significant overlap between the two.

Institutes covers Civil Engineering and Environmental Science

Mathematics and Computer – Based Simulation

Mathematical Models and Computer Simulations focused at the forefront of

development of mathematical models, numerical methods, computer-assisted studies in
science and engineering with the potential for impact across the sciences, and
construction of massively parallel codes for supercomputers. The problem-oriented

6
papers are devoted to various problems including industrial mathematics, numerical
simulation in multiscale and Multiphysics, materials science, chemistry, economics,
social, and life sciences.

Mechanics and Structural Analysis

Structural analysis comprises the set of mechanics theories that obey physical
laws required to study and predict the behavior of structures. The subjects of structural
analysis are engineering artifacts whose integrity is judged largely on their ability to
withstand loads. Structural analysis incorporates the fields of mechanics and dynamics as
well as the many failure theories. From a theoretical perspective, the primary goal of
structural analysis is the computation of deformations, internal forces, and stresses. In
practice, structural analysis reveals the structural performance of the engineering design
and ensures the soundness of structural integrity in design without dependence on direct
testing.

Construction Materials

Building material is material used for construction. Many naturally occurring

substances, such as clay, rocks, sand, and wood, even twigs and leaves, have been used to
construct buildings. Apart from naturally occurring materials, many man-made products
are in use, some more and some less synthetic. The manufacturing of building materials
is an established industry in many countries and the use of these materials is typically
segmented into specific specialty trades, such as carpentry, insulation, plumbing, and
roofing work. They provide the make-up of habitats and structures including homes.

Structural Engineering

Structural Engineering is a specialty within Civil Engineering. Structural

Engineers create drawings and specifications, perform calculations, review the work of
other engineers, write reports and evaluations, and observe construction sites.

Soil Mechanics and Foundation engineering

7
Foundation engineering is the application of rock and soil mechanics. Soil
mechanics describe the behavior of the soil, and rock mechanics describe the behavior of
different types of rocks.

Water Management

Water management is the control and movement of water resources to minimize

damage to life and property and to maximize efficient beneficial use. Good water
management of dams and levees reduces the risk of harm due to flooding. Irrigation
water management systems make the most efficient use of limited water supplies for
agriculture.

Transport and Spatial Planning

Urban sprawl is caused by the interlinkage of spatial planning and transport

characteristics. However, there are only a few approaches that quantify the cross-impacts
of policy options in these two spheres. The purpose of this paper is thus a combined
regional analysis of spatial planning instruments and transport policy, with a special
emphasis on urban–rural diversities.

Construction Management

Construction management is a professional service that provides a project’s

owner(s) with effective management of the project's schedule, cost, quality, safety, scope,
and function. Construction management is compatible with all project delivery methods.

Geodesy

Geodesy is the science of accurately measuring and understanding three

fundamental properties of the Earth: its geometric shape, its orientation in space, and its
gravity field— as well as the changes of these properties with time.

CONCLUSION

Civil engineering is the oldest of the modern engineering disciplines, with historical roots
dating back to the 1700s. Civil engineers are responsible for the design and construction of
society’s infrastructure, such as buildings, highways, bridges, mass transit systems, dams and
locks, and municipal water and sewage treatment systems. They often are responsible for
planning, managing, operating and maintaining these facilities. Using the principles of physics,
biology and chemistry, environmental engineers develop methods to meet such environmental
challenges as water and wastewater treatment, air pollution control, solid and hazardous waste
management, waste recycling, and water resources management. Environmental scientists have a
variety of job responsibilities, including collecting and analyzing air, water and soil samples;
monitoring compliance with environmental laws and regulation; and addressing public meetings
on local environmental challenges.

The civil engineering profession is concerned with the built environment. Civil engineers
plan, design, and construct major facilities, including highways, transit systems, airports, dams,
water and wastewater treatment systems, tunnels, energy facilities, harbors, canals, buildings,
and bridges. Civil engineers manage our air, water, and energy resources and protect society
from natural catastrophes, such as earthquakes, and the hazards society itself generates in the
form of toxic wastes. Because these functions are often crucial to the day-to-day lives of most
people and the facilities involved are physically substantial, civil engineers bear an important
responsibility to the public. Their role is often more than just technical, requiring also a high
degree of communicative skills and an ability to deal with people.
