Acceleration Word Problem

1. Scenario w/ Citations for Criteria #s 1-5
Once upon a time, Itsy Bitsy Spider2 and his evil twin Witsy Fritzy Spider2 decided to
race up a water spout.3 As both of the spiders started up the water spout, they managed to
advance 4 inches from the start. After half a minute, the twins were halfway up the water spout,
and 120 inches above the ground. 20 seconds later, a HUGE storm cloud entered the picture.
This storm cloud was just humiliated in front of his entire storm class for making 200 lbs of hail
instead of sleet5. He started to cry rain at 3 inches per second.5 Because the spout was so slick
with rain, Itsy Bitsy Spider fell off the water spout, as Witsy Fritzy took a moment to snicker at
his twin under a dry spot in the water spout. The storm had finally ended, and a rainbow
appeared giving Itsy Bitsy spider the motivation to start climbing up the waterspout again.
Unfortunately, evil Witsy Fritzy Spider was 200 inches from the start and still moving at the
same speed, which create a tremendous gap between him and Itsy Bitsy. After climbing 45
inches, Itsy Bitsy slowed down to a rate of 2 inches per second,1 causing him to lose the race.

6. Answer Key
1. What is another term for negative acceleration and provide an example of it from the article.
1. Deceleration is another term for negative acceleration. Deceleration was portrayed
in the article when the authors wrote, “Itsy Bitsy slowed down to a rate of 2.5
inches per second,” since it is stated that Itsy Bitsy slowed down, or decelerated.
2. Which spider in the article had a greater rate of acceleration as compared to the other spider?
2. Witsy Fritzy had a greater rate of acceleration compared to Itsy Bitsy.
a. Witsy Fritzy advanced 120 inches in 30 seconds = 4 inches/second
