Spectral Color Conundrum

2 days [10 minutes the second day to finalize samples 1-5.]

Materials [insert image]

Data Collection

Objective: To recreate the masterminds sample set, #s1-5, using trial and error, to figure out the correct ratios of
liquid volume for the spectral colors necessary to make each 20 mL sample.

Notes:
Document your groups trials T1-T5, and final samples, #s 1-5, below, by typing in the amounts [in mL] for each
spectral color used to make the sample, and inserting a PB image for the final color outcome.

The max volume for any sample is always 20 mL

The individual spectral colors are always whole amount of mL.
Cover test tube with thumb, flip, and shake to evenly distribute the colors.

#1 - 2 colors Ratio of colors 15-5

#2 - 3 colors Ratio of colors 10-7-3
#3 - 2 colors Ratio of colors 13-7
#4 - 3 colors Ratio of colors 9-7-4 purple,blue,red?
#5 - 2 colors Ratio of colors 18-2

Test Tube Amount of each spectral Total amount of liquid Color Outcome
color used [mL] volume [mL] [PB image]
T1 15 red, 5 yellow 20

T2 10 Purple, 7 blue, 3 green 20

T3 13 Blue, 7 Yellow 20

T4 9 purple, 7 blue, 4 red 20

T5 18 Yellow, 2 green 20

#1 15 red, 5 yellow 20

#2 10 Purple, 7 blue, 3 green 20

#3 13 Blue, 7 Yellow 20

#4 9 purple, 7 blue, 4 red 20

#5 18 Yellow, 2 green 20

green and purple have same number of drops as blue

II. Analyze Results

1. Identify your groups final results for each sample, #s 1-5 below, by filling in each color [in bold] after the correct
ratio listed for that color needed to make the sample. *TBP = colors to be provided

Sample # of Ratio of Colors Groups Results Ratio of Colors Actual Value [*TBP]
# Colors Total = 20 mL Total = 20 mL

1 2 15 [Red] : 5 [Yellow] [ red] [yellow]

2 3 10 [Purple] : 7 [Blue] : 3 [Green] [blue ] [red] [green]

3 2 13 [ Blue] : 7 [Yellow] [blue ] [yellow]

4 3 9 [Purple] : 7 [Blue] : 4 [Red ] [ purple ] [ blue] [red]

5 2 18 [Yellow ] : 2 [Green] [ yellow] [blue]

2. What was your groups overall initial emotional reaction to this challenge?
Zack: We were in the middle between happy and upset. We knew it would be challenging
Zo: We were kind of excited but were kind of apprehensive because we werent sure how we would do it.
Rishi: We were thrilled by the challenge but also unsure of what would happen.
Balint: Our initial emotion was dread but also slightly excited for the challenge ahead.

3. How did your group choose to begin, as in, what was the groups initial step?
Balint: We first got the supplies that were essential or vital to the project.
Zack: We started by calibrating the colors and all doing different numbers
Rishi: We got everything that we would ever need in the challenge in the beginning.
Zo: We got supplies and then looked at the easiest colors.

4. Based on the Ratios of Colors Actual Value provided by the teacher, how did your group measure up in terms of
accuracy? Support your response comparing your results with the results the teacher provided.
Zo: We were accurate for three out of the five colors, and we got the other two very similar. The two we
got wrong were analogous, so the colors came out very similar.
Zack: We got 3 out of 5 correct and the other two were very close to being correct.
Rishi: 3 of the 5 samples we got correct, and the other 2 looked visually similar.
Balint: We were accurate overall and we did a good job of guessing the correct ratios. We got three out
of the five right.

5. Based on your groups experience collecting the data, identify which sample[s] was the easiest for your group to
figure out and explain why.
Zack: The first sample was the easiest because we knew right away what the correct colors were
Balint: The easiest sample was the first one because we could easily guess the correct ratio.
Zo: The easiest sample was the first sample, because it seemed pretty obvious to us.
Rishi: The easiest sample was the first sample because it looks like how it was mixed.
6. Based on your groups experience collecting the data, identify which sample[s] was the most difficult for your
group to figure out and explain why.
Zack: The second and fourth samples were the most difficult because they were a mixture of 3 colors
instead of 2
Balint: The second example proved to be a challenge for our group because of the three colors involved.
Zo: The second sample was the hardest because it has three colors and those could be any of several
combinations that could achieve a similar color.
Rishi: The hardest were sample 2 and 4 because they had more than two colors mixed.
