For the Thai Traditional Recycle Costume Contest organized
by the Thai Studies Department, which will take place on the
Vichakarn Day, as class 1101, we were assigned to design and create an outfit that can actually be worn by a model. The concept of our class’s Thai traditional costume that we came up with is the Kinnaree, which is a Thai mythical creature who is half-bird and half-maiden. Kinnaree is usually viewed as one of the ideals of Thai beauty and grace, as well as equality and femininity. In order to complement the idea of Kinnaree, the two main colors that we will use to create our costume are gold and pink. The color gold will represent the greatness and the magnificence of our class while the color pink will represent the delicacy and the caring of the members of our class. As the overall costume must be made from recycled materials, the class members had given out ideas for each part of the outfits. The different parts will be constructed from different kinds of components. We planned to airbrush them with the colors pink and gold in the end. The first part we started with was the crown, which will be created from magazine papers and a water bottle. Next, the Sabai will be made from snack bags cut into small triangular pieces. There will also be a flower made from the same material decorate on the chest of the model. For the third part, we will carve paper plates with Thai traditional patterns and form them into Sinh. The accessory that will be added up to the crown, the Sinh and the Sabai are the belt and the wings. We will use a piece of cardboard and soda tabs to make the buckle and the strap of the belt. The wings, which are the most important part that will complete our dress, are planned to be constructed from plywood and/or bagasse. As a finishing touch, we will make a Thai woven fish mobile using plastic straws for the fish and a plastic book binding for the handle. There will be 9 fish on the mobile in which will represent the advancement as the number 9 in Thai is pronounced the same as the Thai word for advancement. In order to get the most efficient product, each person in the class is assigned to do a work, according to their proficiencies. The work was divided into 8 parts in which will be the main responsibilities of each group. There will be the essay writing team (writes out the description of how the costume will look like and the concept behind it), the designers (design the costume based on the concept), the materials gathering team (searches for recycled materials to use in the dress making process), the crafting team (puts together the materials to create the costume), the video editors (film and edit videos), the coordinators (cooperate with the teachers and the other classes), the makeup team (prepares the model for the fashion show), and the model (puts on and displays the costume on the runway).
