Amitabh Bachchan is perhaps the biggest star of the world who will be
remembered for his versatility. Angry young man image if carefully seen, he
played during his early career, was not in much films except like Deewar, Sholay
etc.
Amitabh Bachchan is often called the 'Angry Young Man' of Indian cinema,
a term inspired by realist London theatre of the 1950s, in particular Osborne’s
Look Back In Anger. Much as Amitabh is still celebrated for his wide-ranging
performances as romantic hero, dramatic lead, comedian and now elder
statesman, it is the roles he played as the AYM for which he is most celebrated.
It is perhaps for this reason that Amitabh’s Angry Young Man had
such far-reaching cultural impact. For many young Asians the world
over, he epitomised a heroic masculinity whilst providing a link to India,
its traditional values and a proud, unapologetic sense of self. He was
also celebrated as the ideal son, deeply attached to his mother, who
would look after family when the father failed. His brooding good looks
(and lack of interest in women) added to his appeal.
BUT…..
In the 60s there came an euphoria, a craze, a tidal wave which made women to
run behind him with those naughty crinkling eyes, the stylish shake of the head
and the enigmatic smile. It belonged to none other than Megastar Rajesh Khanna,
who later, with an amazing fan following, went on to create history of sorts in the
Indian film industry.
Though Rajesh Khanna began his film career with inconsequential movies like
Akhri Khat (1966) and Raaz (1967), but once Aradhna (1969) was released, he
spread a frenzy in the masses that remained unfazed long after.
There was no obvious rationale for the Rajesh Khanna miracle. He didn`t really
have the conventional good looks, yet the boy-next-door appeal and the charisma
generated through his twinkling eyes and heady smile were enough to ensure the
birth of a super-duper star.
He began his rule over the tinsel town when both his films Aradhana and Do
Raaste ran simultaneously in the same year (1969), to become golden jubilee hits.
Successful movies in which he has appeared include Sachaa Jhutha,
Aradhana , Anand and Avtar. He won the Filmfare Best Actor Award thrice.
Rajesh Khanna married Dimple Kapadia, a Bollywood actress. They are the
parents of Twinkle Khanna and Rinke Khanna, both Bollywood actresses. Khanna
and Kapadia later separated. Their daughter Twinkle is married to current star
Akshay Kumar.
Amitabh acted in two movies, together with other Mega Star Rajesh
Khanna, in Anand and in Namak Haraam. In both Amitabh Bachan took Award
for Best Supporting Actor. While in Anand (1970)Rajesh Khanna took Award for
Best Actor. At this time Amitabh Bachan was premature in Bollywood to compete
with Kaka Jee (Rajesh Khanna's nick name). There can be no comparison in
between both the actors, as one is South and other North.
Dilip Kumar surely and Amitabh Bachchan may be an icons and Shahrukh Khan
can boast to be a Mega Star (so far) today but whosoever has seen the glorious
days of Rajesh Khanna swears that none had it so majestic an innings.
Nominations- He was nominated for the Filmfare best actor award for 10 years
out of the 15 years between 1969 and 1983. And the total films that he was
nominated for filmfare best actor award was 15.
