Toolkits I will use:

1. CHAMPS sets up expectations for success. Champs stands for conversation, help,
activity, movement, participation, and success. The goal of this process is that students
become responsible, motivated, and highly engaged. Teachers also teach students how to
be successful in any given situation. This strategy I believe would be most effective for
upper elementary to secondary.

2. Love and Logic is a parenting AND teaching strategy. The main focus of this style is
acting on empathy. Teachers act as role models and allow students to learn from
mistakes. The goal is to raise responsible and empowered students. Phrasing is direct but
sensitive. I believe this strategy would be best used with early childhood aged children
and classrooms. However, I believe empathy can be applied to any and all aged children.

3. The First Days of school stresses the importance of the establishing procedures on the
first day of school. Along with the procedures it is important that students receive
consistency. Creating a productive work environment is one of the goals of this style.
One thing I liked about this process was sending letters home before school started to
both students and teachers. I believe this strategy could apply to any and all grade levels.

4. Capturing Kids Hearts is a very positive approach that’s goal is to develop healthy
and happy relationships among students and adults. I love how empowering this
process is through social contract and using specified listening skills. I also would
hope to implement the EXCEL teaching model. I would use this with any grade
level, perhaps omitting some aspects for lower elementary.

5. Retail therapy, quality schools, and choice theory has really important pieces that I
would use like the caring habits such as trust and negotiation. I think it is important
to teach students helpful and kind ways to teach caring habits and also not so caring
habits. I would use this will all grade levels.

6. Kids are worth it is a very positive approach, which I really appreciate. I also love
that this program teaches resiliency. I believe that is something all young people
need to learn. For that reason, I would use Kids are worth it in my lower elementary
classroom.

7. Alfie Kohn’s rewards and punishments stress the damage that rewards and
punishments have. I think it important instead to teach students to be confident in
their best work and able to accept feedback when it is not their best work. For these
reasons I would use these beliefs in my classroom. I think this could be applied to
any age or grade level.

Toolkits I Won’t Use:

1. Responsible Thinking Process allows for students to take responsibility of their own
behavior. This program teaches respect and empowerment. I do not feel confident in instilling
this in my student simply by this process.

2. Assertive Discipline emphasizes being an assertive teacher. I like that aspect of the
program, however, I believe that sometimes in early childhood is essential to step
back from being assertive and simply be emphatic. For that reason I would use this
with upper elementary to secondary.

3. Restitution seems a bit harsh to me. I would see this as middle school to secondary
approach. I do not think I would be comfortable being that straight forward with
young children. I do like how clear the directions and consequences are stated
through restitution.

4. Attitude Check is a really great way for encouraging students to take responsibility
for their actions and to understand that all actions have consequences. However, I
worry that this would be difficult to implement with all children, each day, every
day. I worry I would fall behind or forget some students. I believe this could be used
with any grade level but especially middle school.

5. Emotional Intelligence hopes to instill really good things in students such as self-
awareness, yet I don’t understand how this could be implemented as a management
plan. I believe that those things should always be incorporated. This would be best
used in lower elementary.

6. Positive Behavior Support is an organized behavioral intervention. It is prevention

oriented. It has four main elements. These elements are systems, data, practice, and
outcomes. This is a way to provide support so that all students can have success. I don’t
think I understand enough about this
