Important Dates
Spring break is just around the corner and I think we are all ready
3/16 Report Cards for a break and some warmer weather! The students in 2Y have been
go home
working hard but spring fever is definitely setting in! This past week, we
3/20 Institute Day have been talking a lot about the expectations in 2nd grade that go
(no school)
along with being respectful, responsible, and safe. Please take a moment
3/26 Spring Break
to talk with your child to reinforce these behaviors. Thank you!

Reading - Our current reading unit focuses on fiction stories. When reading fiction books,
we get to go on adventures with the characters. Some of the skills we have been learning
(and reviewing) are:

• giving our books a sneak peek by looking at the front cover, back cover, and table of
contents before reading to get an idea of what the book is about.

• keeping track of the setting and paying attention to where and when the story is
happening

• predicting what might happen next

• retelling the important parts

• rereading to notice more

We are also focusing on learning all we can about the characters in our books. Authors
usually give us many clues (both in the words and pictures) to help us get to know the main
characters. We can also learn a lot about the main characters through minor characters in
the story.

Writing - Going along with our reading unit, we are focusing on writing edge-of-the-seat
fictions stories. These are fictions stories that makes the reader have to turn the page. As a
writer, we can do this by creating a problem and building up to the solution, having
surprising twists, creating strong emotions, and ending a page or chapter on a
cliffhanger.

Math - We have spent the last few weeks learning different

addition strategies. This past week, we moved on to subtraction.
We started with the arrow way and the empty number line. This
week, we will be using the place value chart and the vertical
method. Please continue to have your child practice their basic
addition and subtraction math facts.
