If you want me to pick just one for each decade, then my personal picks would be:

1960s - Psycho

1970s - The Godfather

1980s - Star Wars V: The Empire Strikes Back

1990s - Pulp Fiction

2000s - The Dark Knight

1. 2001: A space Odyssey
1960s: The Film Buffs

5. Lawrence of Arabia

4. Dr. Strangelove

3. Psycho
2. Once Upon a Time in the West
1. The Good, the Bad and the Ugly
We’ll have to go deeper. Psycho is 6th on the critics’ list … but 2001 is 7th on the
film buffs’. It’s very close, but …

The consensus best film of the 1960s was 2001: A Space Odyssey (Stanley
Kubrick, 1968).

1970s: The Critics and Scholars

5. Chinatown

4. The Godfather Part II

2. The Godfather Part II

1. The Godfather

The consensus best film of the 1970s (to the surprise of exactly zero people on
planet Earth) was The Godfather (Francis Ford Coppola, 1972). Coppola has three
films that made both lists, a feat accomplished by only two other films in this fifty-
year span! Will we ever see a decade like that again?

1980s: The Critics and Scholars

Empire Strikes Back is 16th, and Back to the Future is 18th.

On the film buffs’ list, The Shining is 6th, Raging Bull is 14th, and Blade Runner
is 18th.
Raiders of the Lost Ark gives it a run for its money, but ..

The consensus best film of the 1980s was The Shining (Stanley Kubrick, 1980).

1990s: The Critics and Scholars

5. The Piano
4. The Thin Red Line

3. Breaking the Waves

1. GoodFellas

1990s: The Film Buffs

5. Forrest Gump
4. Fight Club

3. Pulp Fiction

2. Schindler’s List

1. The Shawshank Redemption

It’s worth noting that GoodFellas is 6th on the film buffs’ list and Schindler’s List
is 6th on the critics’. But …

The consensus best film of the 1990s was Pulp Fiction (Quentin Tarrentino, 1994).
For the 2000s, we’ll treat the three installments of Peter Jackson’s epic as one
entry.
