Objectives/Theory:

In this experiment we learn about the time behavior of the plant

using the ‘Black Box’ approach by changing the motor speed and infer the relationship between
input voltage and output speed from the way in which the motor responds. We have to measure
the step response of the motor. This will help us to measure

 Measure the parameters of a plant using step tests

 Describe the characteristics of a first order lag

 State the time model of the DC motor

Apparatus:

 MS15 DC Motor Module

 AS3 Command Potentiometer
 CLIO Interface Module with PC Connection Lead
 System Power 90 Power Supply (or equivalent)
 4mm Connecting Leads
 PC running VCL Virtual Control Laboratory Software

Table:

t1 t2 t3 Input Output Gain, τ

Span Span Kp (t1+t2+t3)/3
0.215ms 0.20ms 0.4995ms 6V 3.65V 0.6 0.305msec

Plant Gain, Kp 0.6

Time Constant 0.305 msec

Calculation(If any):

Input Span = A1 - B1=3-(-3)=6

Output Span = A4 - B4=1.85-(-1.8)=3.65

Gain=Output Span/Input Span=(A4-B4)/( A1- B1)=3.65/6=0.6

From graph we got t1 as 0.215 msec (initial slope)

t2=1.06/5=0.2 msec (Settling method)

t3= B4+0.63(A4-B4)=1.8+0.63*(1.85-1.8)
=0.4995 msec (63% method)

Discussion:
In this experiment we have measured the gain and time constant which characterize the motor.
For the gain we have taken parameter values in steady state condition. For the transient response
we have seen 3 methods of measuring the time constant (τ). Among the 3 methods we found the
closest value to be from the graph as per initial slope method. The next closest one we got was
from the settling method since here we are dividing the settling time by 5 as we approximate the
settling time to be 5τ. We got almost double the value from the 63% method. However for
accuracy we took the average of all τ found by the 3 methods and it turns out that the average
value is also closest to the τ found by initial slope method.
