A NEW PERSPECTIVE: INSIDE DHVTSU’S 156th FOUNDING ANNIVERSARY

From its humble beginnings as an arts and trades school back in November 4, 1861 which was
known at that time as Escuela de Artes y Oficios de Bacolor, Don Honorio Ventura
Technological State University has withstood the test of time, surviving World War 1, World War
2 and even Mt. Pinatubo’s eruption to become the premier State University in Pampanga.

One hundred and fifty-six years later, DHVTSU commemorates its founding anniversary during
its weeklong University Days, from December 12 to 15, which hosted a number of events that
featured the university, the Honorian Community and Pampanga in itself.

For four days, the Honorian Community celebrated the founding anniversary of the university in
different festivities. Included in the festivities are new competitions including the Singkagaling
Contest, Ms. Q & A, DHVTSU’s 1st Motorbike & Car Show Competition, among others.

Meanwhile, crowd favorite competitions such as the Color Fun Run, Battle of the Bands, Hip-
Hop Dance Competition, University-wide Quiz Bowl and Mr. & Ms. DHVTSU also returned and
captivated Honorians during the weeklong celebration.
First Ms. Q and A Competition Captivates Honorians

Showing their wit and talent, 12 LGBTQ members from different colleges ramped on the
makeshift stage in front of the College of Industrial Technology (CIT) during DHVTSU’s
celebration of the University Days last December 13, 2017.

The event was opened by a production number where the contestants were introduced to the
crowd and was followed by a long gown competition. To further test their wit and determine
which candidate will be hailed Ms. Q and A, first, an “expound the word” portion was held. They
were each given one word and were tasked to explain related things to the said word.

After that segment, eight contestants proceeded to the next round called “wit lang”. Absurd
questions were asked to the contestants which should be answered in an intelligent or ‘witty’
manner.

Three contestants were eliminated after the contest which left five remaining contestants
challenged by the competition called “Beklamation”. They should declaim their answers on
relevant questions. One of which is “Do you believe that social media is positive or negative?”

Moreover, the winners of the first Ms. Q and A are as follows:

1. Louise Maninang, Senior High School - Ms. Q and A 2017
2. Jrel Macapinlac , College of Education - 1st Runner-up
3. Miguel De Leon Olchondra, College of Education - 2nd Runner-up

Former The Voice Teens PH artist Jay Emmanuel Macatuno and Science, Technology,

nabbed the championship in the Singkagaling singing competition during the University Days
held at the stage in front of the College of Industrial Technology, December 13, 2017.

“Sobrang saya kasi kahit mahirap yung kanta, nanalo pa din. Hindi pa nga nagsisink-in kasi
nakakakaba talaga kanina kasi ang daming magagaling,” Macatuno asserted when asked
regarding his sentiments upon their victory over other 16 participants.

Being the only duo performer, Macatuno and Tanjuakio managed to pilfer the attention of both
the audience and the judges with their undeniable chemistry in their execution of Gary
Valenciano’s Sana Maulit Muli. Macatuno even added that this could have been their edge over
other contenders.

Despite the half-hour power interruption, Ms. Porac Campus representative Charlene Mallari
and College of Social Sciences and Philosophy stud John Daniel Sadsad outshined 10 other
contending pairs from different colleges and campuses during the third day of the University
Days, December 14 in Mr. and Ms. Don Honorio Ventura Technological State University
(DHVTSU) 2017 at the New University Gymnasium.

The contestants first stunned the audience and judges with their model-like bodies in the swim
wear competition where both male and female candidates wore body-accentuating cloth
garments. However, halfway during the long gown and formal wear competition, where the
aspiring title-holders exuded their finesse and elegance with their graceful and poised walk, an
unanticipated power interruption took place lasting 30 minutes; thus, delaying the contest proper
and encouraging some of the audience to vacate the premise.

On the contrary, the long gown and formal wear competition segment of the event resumed
simultaneously after the resumption of stable electricity in the New University Gymnasium.
Afterwards, Jay Emmanuel Macatuno and Bernadette Anne Tanjuakio, victors of the
Singkagaling Competition 2017, delivered their own rendition of Sam Smith’s Too Good at
Goodbyes for an intermission number.

Subsequently, the contestants were subjected to a casual interview with questions based on
each contestant’s personal background; some questions were mostly pertinent to their would-be
contribution to society or the university in case of victory, full utilization of their knowledge for the
benefit of their community, life advocacies, and tourism benefiting plans.

Thereafter, from 22 contenders (11 male, 11 female), the number was reduced to ten with the
disclosure of the Top 5 Male and Top 5 Female contenders. The criteria used to determine the
