Social Constructivism – Learning Theory:

Through planning my mathematics lesson and incorporating information and

communication technologies (ICT), my project is strongly underpinned by the social

constructivism theory. Social constructivism is the theory of sharing ideas collaboratively and

constructing learning through a social context (Amineh & Asl, 2015). According to Amineh &

Asl (2015), students develop cognitive abilities as well as making meaning and understanding

of content through the interaction of others. In producing my lesson project, aspects of the

social constructivism theory have been closely followed for optimal child learning. ICT tools

such as answer garden, google forms, keynote and canva have been incorporated into the

lesson plan which link closely with peer collaboration and group work. For example, when

students need to predict the story line from the front cover of Possum Magic, students will

use answer garden, an interactive brainstorm website, whereby they will answer a question

posed. It is through peer collaboration that students will interact with other students and

ultimately make new connections through this form of ICT. Additionally, I have incorporated

google forms, an online survey creation website, whereby students in groups will actively

participate in group discussion creating a survey. It is through peer collaboration that

students will develop ideas, problem solve and build upon ideas from one another (Aminesh

& Asl, 2015). The zone of proximal development (ZPD), established by Lev Vygotsky,

surrounds the social constructivism theory. It is fundamental that all students develop within

the ZPD for optimal learning, and according to Vygotsky, through the interaction with peers

more cognitive processes are achieved (Aminesh & Asl, 2015). Consequently, through

surrounding my lesson around peer collaboration, students will develop new knowledge and

expand on understandings through social interaction.
