Start of Scene Sun Canopy
Narrator 1 and 2: Luke, Charla, Ian, Will, Lyssa, and J.J have been stuck
on an island for 28 days because they have been shipwrecked. J.J. is
searching for help by stowing away in a smugglers float plane while the
others are trying to escape from the island, using a life raft, because they
think J.J will not come back. The time is 8:50 as they are leaving.
Luke (loudly)- Row!
Narrator 1: Luke and Charla splash through the water, pushing the raft out
to sea. On the lifeboat, Ian and Lyssa heave the oars.
Lyssa & Ian: (Heave The Oars)
Narrator 2: The tide was out, but the sea was way rougher that how it
usually is. Every single time they made any type of progress, a powerful
wave would take hold of the craft and send it careening back toward the
island.
(Will crying from the pain from the raft on the lifeboat LOUDLY)
Lyssa: (shout) Were hurting him! Let's try again when the ocean calms
down.
Ian:(loudly) No! We make our move when we've got the tide.
Luke: (action a breaker hit Lukes face)
Charla (raged): I hate this place! Getting here almost killed us and getting
away is going to finish the job!
Narrator 1: Suddenly, the raft was in the grasp of a giant monster swell.
The wave was threatening to come down and crush him. He was was
frozen, powerless to move, staring up at the terrified face of Will, who
stared back at him through the flap of the sun canopy.
Luke: (thinking)After all I’ve survived, I’m going to be drowned by my own
lifeboat!
Luke: (searching for the life raft because he got seperated because of a big
wave)
Charla: Out there! (pointing to the life raft)
Narrator 2: Luke stares. In only a handful of seconds, the raft was forty feet
away. Now free of the incoming surf, it was being pulled out to sea by a
relentless undertow.
Luke: (Launching through the waves) Swim for it!
Lyssa and Ian: (paddling like mad to slow things down)
Charla: (swimming like mad with all her might)
Narrator 1: Still swimming, Luke saw Charla heave herself up over the side.
It was only then that he realized how very far the boat was, and how tired
and heavy his arms and legs felt. An overwhelming isolation gripped him. If
he couldn’t reach the raft, Then he’d be marooned alone.
Luke: (thinking furiously) Never! I won’t go back there! If I can’t reach the
others, i’ll drown right here and now!
Narrator 2: He could barely hear the shouts of the other castaways over the
pounding of his heart. Luke saw the lifeboat pulling away. It would mean no
hope.
Charla and Lyssa: (throwing the life preserver with all might trying to save
luke from drowning)
(A loud splash)
(With no energy Charla pulled Luke up on the life raft)
Luke: (Luke finds a place to sleep on the end of the raft)
Luke: (Luke goes to sleep. He sleeps very deeply)
Charla: (mumbling) Why didn't I remember how much I hate bobbing
around the ocean. Maybe I would have the brains to stay back on dry land
and take my chances with the smugglers.
(Luke wakes up)
(Lyssa looking like she was gonna throw up)
Narrator 1: Luke regarded Lyssa. The girl has suffered from terrible
seasickness while on the Phoenix.
Luke: (kindly) Hey. No one’s going to get on your case if you have to hang
your head over the side.
Will: Hey Lyss, don’t barf on the coconuts. We need the water.
Lyssa: Big talk from the guy who bled everywhere
Will: Lyss
Narrator 2: But his sister’s queasiness bubbled up inside her. With a
strangled gurgle, she headed for the flap. She threw the canopy wide.
Lyssa: (action and shocking scream)
