Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana Launched Parliament Passes the Insolvency and Bankruptcy Code
The Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana was launched by the Prime Minister at Ballia on 1st May, 2016. The scheme aims
to provide cooking gas connections to five crore below-poverty-line beneficiaries over the next three years with an
allocation of Rs 8000 crore. The Scheme provides a financial support of Rs 1600 for each LPG connection to the BPL
households. The identification of eligible BPL families will be made in consultation with the State Governments and
the Union Territories. This Scheme would be implemented over three years, namely, the FY 2016-17, 2017-18 and
T he historic 'Insolvency and Bankruptcy Code, 2016' was passed by Parliament on 11th May, 2016. This is
considered as the biggest economic reform next only to GST. The law aims to consolidate the laws relating to
insolvency of companies and limited liability entities (including limited liability partnerships and other entities
with limited liability), unlimited liability partnerships and individuals, presently contained in a number of
legislations, into a single legislation. Such consolidation will provide for a greater clarity in law and facilitate the
