MODULE: Hydraulic, TEC

Subject: Hydraulic course.

Aim: The apprentice/student is able to build up, put in to operation, maintain,

faultfinding repairing on automatics machinery and equipment with hydraulics
and electrical controlled valves in hydraulics circuits.

Required skills: The apprentice/student has no basic skills within hydraulics.

Language skills of English which enables him/ her to follow the lessons taught

Performance: During the 3 weeks exchange the apprentice will be able to

apply knowledge on the most common components used in on/off controlled
hydraulic systems. One week in company training. Tests will take place
individually for all the apprentices/students.

The apprentice/student will take part in a problem based learning activity. The
lessons will be a mixture of theoretical and hands-on input activities. The
learning style of the students will be considered. The apprentices/students
work in groups of 2-3 persons on a mechatronics system. At the end of the
module the apprentice/student works on a hydraulic system, builds up parts of
it and hereafter he/she tests it.

Physic of hydraulic

Fluids (Water or Oil) have No shape

Physic of hydraulic

Fluids are incompressible

Physic of hydraulic

By linear movements a mechanical

connection, for example a beam, could
be replaced by a tube filled with fluids
Physic of hydraulic

By angular movements a mechanical

connection, could be replaced by a tube
filled with fluids.
Physic of hydraulic

Law of Pascal: The pressure in a point in

a static (not moving) fluid is the same in
all directions.
Physic of hydraulic

Law of Pascal: The pressure in a point in

a static (not moving) fluid is the same in
all directions
Physic of hydraulic

If you want to increase force (make

force bigger) it is possible to use a
lever. F1 is then multiplied because
the length of l1 is bigger than l2
Physic of hydraulic

In hydraulic gaining of force is done by

producing pressure with a little area A1
and then using the pressure making
force at a bigger area A2.

2. Clean by production of components
3. Clean after production
4. Clean by handling components
5. Clean by installation of components
Handling oil

The most important issue by

hydraulic oil is:
Purity
1. From supplier
2. By storage
3. By filling
4. By using in the machine
5. Production of the machine
6. By first start up of the machine
What do we wish of

Environmental kindly
Storage of hydraulic oil

• Protect against rain

Storage of hydraulic oil

• Avoid up right standing of barrels

Storage of hydraulic oil
• Up right standing cause corrosion because of
rain
• By temperature changes water sucked into

Wood splitter extended

You should handle heavy pieces of wood. The mass is too big to carry. Please
now build out the system with wire lift pulling the wooden pieces up by a
hydraulic motor. There is only one pump for supplying the pressure.

The specifications are:

You can lift or split the wood (only one action at the same time
It should be possible to drink a beer with running motor without
burning the oil.
It should be possible to adjust (reduce) the speed of the lift when
lifting the wooden pieces.

The possible components are shown in FESTO equipment list.

It is possible to choose a manual or electrical control of the valves

Discuss your solution and present the diagram of your group.
