ENGL 1T
Reflection 7

1. Using class notes, as well as your annotations from TSIS, Chapter 6, explain in your own
words what it means to:

- Plant a Naysayer in your argument

To plant a naysayer in an argument is to be aware of what an opposing side can argue

against your claim and the interest that a person or group of people have to prove that goes
against what you are saying.

- Make a concession in your argument

To make a concession in an argument is to acknowledge what the opposing side of your

argument is and to give credit to it, while still defending your claims and ideas. Sticking to your
side is important and even though you’re considering the other side, you still say why you are
sticking to your claims and why you think its the correct thing.

2. On a scale of 1-5, 5 being very confident and 1 being not at all confident, where would you
rate your understanding about how to plant a naysayer or make a concession IN YOUR OWN
ESSAY? Explain.

On a scale of 1-5 I feel like I am at a 3.5 at understanding where I can input my

concession and plant a naysayer. I feel like the activity in class helped me a lot to get a clear idea
of what is expected in both my concession and naysayer. Although I know what is expected, it
feels like once I start giving it more thought, it can get complicated because my ideas can be all
over the place and be complicated to have a strong flow in my paragraph(s) for my concession
and naysayer.

3. Based upon your BLOCKING CARDS from today's class, write a 1-2 paragraph SECTION
where you plant the naysayer perspective and make a concession. Draft it below.

Luiselli makes a lot of great points throughout her book, Tell Me How It Ends: An Essay
in Forty Questions. She claims that these unaccompanied minors that come to the U.S. should be
granted asylum and be given a visa to have the opportunity to start over. On the one hand, I agree
with the idea that gang violence tends to follow the victim at any cost. But on the other hand, I
insist that these unaccompanied minors should be granted asylum here in the U.S. The migrants
flee their homeland and seek refuge in the U.S., they so called “land of the free”. These
unaccompanied minors aren’t even looking for the famous “American Dream” instead they look
for a new opportunity to start over and run away from what's haunting them. All the gang
violence that these unaccompanied minors run away from still somehow follows them and
haunts them until they either break or give up or pay the consequences. Many people say that
they bring this problem to the U.S. and make the U.S. deal with it however they can. There is
some truth to that, but doesn’t mean that these kids do it intentionally. Compared to their
homeland, in the United States there is more security, chances to start over, and the possibility to
seek happiness even though they fear of being haunted by both the gangs or ICE to be deported.

4. After drafting your concession paragraph(s), look at your outline. And answer these questions:

A) Do you think you will need to rearrange your ideas in the outline? If so, why. If not, why not?

I don’t think I will need to rearrange my ideas around in my outline because I tried to tie
everything together to make it flow and not sound confusing. I still feel like organizing my ideas
a little more better will help my essay flow more smoothly and not rise confusion to my
audience. Although I still want to make a few arrangements. I tried my best to write this
concession and naysayer, but I know that I will still need to revise it.

B) Where, exactly, do you plan on integrating your concession into your essay? After what
claim? What paragraph? Explain your plan for revision.

I plan on integrating my concession in the last claim of my essay. My claim will be talking
about seeking refuge. I still need to revise my claim, but when I wrote out my concession and
naysayer, it gave me a clear idea on where to integrate it and what exactly to say. I plan to fix my
claim(s) and tie it back to the focus question and make it fit with what I said in both the
concession and naysayer.

5. What is your plan for writing the first draft of the essay?

I plan to have my full essay typed out by tomorrow.

I will revise my claims tonight.

I will revise my evidence to only involve relevant quotes that make my analysis stronger.

Type out essay by tomorrow. (03/14/18)

Revise my concession and naysayer to see if I can take out or include more ideas.
