Evaluation of pre jump velocity and depth of flow

The theoretical value of the velocity at the invert of stilling basin or at the start of
hydraulic jump can be calculated by the following relation:

: Theoretical velocity

H: Difference between upstream reservoir elevation and stilling basin invert.

 The height of the spillway

Head over the spillway crest

Example:
For a spillway shown below, total head in the reservoir (H) = 100 m, head over the crest
of the spillway ( ) = 5 m, evaluate the actual velocity and initial depth of flow at the
invert level of the basin, if the discharge passed over the spillway = 500 m3/s and width
of the basin = 25 m.
