Question 2

Read the following text. Then, answer questions (a) – (j).

Many years before, not many people would recognize the name Tan Sri Anthony
Francis Fernandes but now he is none other than the entrepreneur who rose to prominence by
turning AirAsia, a failing commercial airline into a successful budget airline company and
introducing the famous tagline “Now everybody can fly.”

Tony Fernandes was born on 30th April 1964 in Kuala Lumpur. He completed his
secondary education at Epsom College, London and graduated from London School of
Economics in 1987. Fernandes was admitted as Associate Member of the Association of
Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA) in 1991 and became Fellow Member in 1996.

Upon his return to Malaysia, he became the youngest Managing Director of Warner
Music and subsequently became the South East Asian Regional Vice President of Warner
Music Group. Fernandes then left to pursue his dream of starting a budget airline. In 2001, he
had the opportunity to meet with Tun Dr. Mahathir who advised him to buy an existing airline
rather than start a new one. Fernandes mortgaged his home and used his savings to buy
AirAsia.

The purchase occurred just after the September 11 th of terrorist attacks in America and
many people thought that Fernandes was crazy to venture into airline industry at such time.
Yet one year after his takeover, Fernandes broke even and cleared all his debts. The rest, as
they say, is history.

Fernandes was named ‘Malaysian CEO of the Year’ in 2003 and has since been
named the recipient of other prestigious business awards around the world. He has also been
honoured by the Yang Dipertuan Agong of Malaysia and the governments of France and
Britain. He has indeed done the country proud. He is not likely to rest on his laurels and is
definitely destined for greater success in the future.

Question 4

Read the passage below.

HOW JACKIE CHAN GOT HIS NAME

Chan Kong-sang was born in Hong Kong on 7th of April, 1954. His parents named
him Chan Kong-sang, which has the meaning of “born in Hong Kong.” Chan’s father was a
cook and Chan’s mother was a housekeeper. When Chan was young, his father would wake
him early in the morning and together they would practice kung fu. His father believed that
learning kung fu would help build Chan’s character, teaching him patience, strength, and
courage.

When Chan was 7 years old, his father starts a new journey as the head cook at the
American embassy in Australia. He felt that it would be best for Chan to stay behind in Hong
Kong to learn a skill, so he sent Chan into China Drama Academy, a school was meant to
prepare boys for a life in the Chinese Opera. During Chan’s time at the school, he learned
martial arts, acrobatics, singing, and acting. Students at the school were severely disciplined
and were beaten if they disobeyed or made mistakes. It was a very harsh and difficult life but
Chan had nowhere else to go, so he stayed. He rarely saw his parents for many years.

When Chan was 17 years old, he graduated from the China Drama Academy.
Unfortunately the Chinese opera was no longer popular, so Chan and his classmates had to
find other work. This was difficult because at the school they were never taught how to read
or write. The only work available for them was unskilled labour or stunt work. Each year
many movies were made in Hong Kong and there was always a need for a young and strong
stuntman. Chan was extraordinarily athletic and inventive, and gained a reputation for being
fearless, so he was in demand at that time.

Over the next few years, Chan worked as a stuntman, but when the Hong Kong movie
industry began to fail, he was forced to go to Australia to live with his parents. He briefly
attended Dickson College and worked as a construction worker. A fellow worker named Jack had
a problem pronouncing “Kong-sang” and started calling Chan as “Little Jack” that was later
shortened to “Jackie”, and the name Jackie Chan has stuck with him ever since.

And why the sudden kiss? No rage or hullabaloo.
You’d help me with some little jobs? Come closer, let me look, dear.
Can this be really you?
For goodness sake, what’s this?

Now were you struck by lightning

Your face is clean for once, dear.
Your clothes without crease. Or were you stunned at sport?
You saved your luncheon money? Ah… now I see the reason. You’ve
