Process:
I used the Spot Healing Brush and Cloning tools to remove all the words. After
researching fonts, I found a matching font. I put a slight gradient on the text to give
the glowing effect. I used the quick selection tool to cut out the woman’s face I needed Housekeeper’s
to use.. Using color matching and replacement tools, I matched her face color to the
original actress’ tone. I used the brush tool to blend her face in and give some darker
shading like the others. Using the selction tool, I duplicated the actress’ hair to use on
the employee of the month. Using the spot healing brush, I removed one of the men’s
weapons and replaced it with a broom. I adjusted its levels to match the background
and then used the brush tool to blend it in and to have it fade into the background of
the poster.

The Lord of the Rings
COMM 130 (Intro to VIsual Communications) “One ring to rule them all, One ring to find them, One ring to bring them all and in the darkness bind them.”
The Lord of the Rings is an engaging and adventurous trilogy about a company which sets forth to

destroy the One ring – the ring of power.
How it began …
Long ago a dark lord, Sauron, seeking to control Middle Earth, formed the ultimate ring of Power and
additional rings. He gave these other rings away; nine rings to mortal men, seven to the dwarven lords,
and three to the elves. Sauron’s ring gave him power to rule above all these and would aid him in his

feat to rule Middle Earth.
There were many which fought against the Dark Lord Sauron. The Dark Lord was killed in battle, but
his ring lived on. Because the ring lived on, so did the spirit of Sauron. Time passed and the ring fell into
the hands of a creature name Gollum, giving him unnatrually long life.
One day, a Hobbit named Bilbo Baggins discovered the ring and took it, unaware of its powers.
Bilbo’s life was also extended as he too became bound to the ring. Bilbo decides to leave his home,
giving everything he possessed – including the ring – to his nephew Frodo.
The Rise
Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator, and InDesign The Dark Lord felt his time had come and began rebuilding his armies. Consumed by their rings and
power, the nine mortal men surrendered their wills to Sauron making them Wraiths (nearly immortal
beings). Whisperings of that ancient evil leaving its dormancy reached the ears of a Wizard, Gandalf.
Gandalf, an old friend of Bilbo and Frodo, realizes that the ring in Frodo’s possession was none other
than the Ring of Power. Filled with fear, he sends Frodo and a few dear

friends on a dangerous journey to Rivendale, the land of the Elves. It is
there that a council is held to determine the fate of the ring.
During this council a company is formed, that together they might
travel to the land of Mordor to destroy the ring of Power.
Create a captivating brochure for a company advertising the “Lord of the Rings.” Hobbits; Sam, the most loyal of friends; and finally, Frodo, the ring bearer, in their quest to destroy the
ring of Power to prevent the rise of evil in Middle Earth.
Create a new logo to fit a company. Go watch, listen, or read this trilogy by making your purchase today on
www.ringofpower.com.
Process:
I first edited the lighting of my images in Photoshop. I clipped three images: Frodo,
Sauron, and the ring. In Illustrator I created my logo and made the middle part of
my logo image transparent to give a nice affect when placed on the image of the
misty mountains. In InDesign I turned the opacity down for the image of the map as a
background. I text wrapped the image of the ring and I adjusted the transparency of
Frodo and Sauron for the front cover.

Programs/Tools:
Adobe Illustrator
Objectives:
Create a beautiful design.
Emphasize important elements of the quote.
Process:
In Adobe Illustrator I first created an oval shape using the circle tool to pace the quote
in. Using the pen tool, I created the border that wraps around a majority of the shape.
Again, I used the circle tool to create the flowers which I carefully placed and designed
for visual interest. I used a sans-serif and script font for the quote.

Baskerville is a serif typface that was designed in

font, cost, and web address.
Process:
I first reserached information about Baskerville font to learn more about it and its
designer. I used a triad color scheme, keeping the colors soft to bring out the softness
John Baskerville desired to communicate. I made the cost and web address bold
and large to draw attention to the key information. The big “g” in the background was
enlarged in Illustrator and then I turned down the opacity. This helped add to the design
without being distracting. I made sure to align the body copy and the font name,
“Baskerville” with the top and bottom of the body copy. fonts.com

Programs/Tools:
Paper, Acrylic Paint, Black Ink, Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Illustrator
Objectives:
Create posters inspired by Paul Rand for the play “King Lear.”
Create part of the poster outside of Adobe programs.
Process:
For the blue poster, I first drew the cloaked image in the mirror with a pencil in a
styrophome plate. Using black ink, I created a stamp. Then, I used acrylic paint to
enhance the image. I scanned the image and edited it in Photoshop, thus creating a
gradient. I used the color of the border of the mirror as the background of the poster.
Using a paint tool, I created a painted texture. Afterwards, I opened the image in
Illustrator and added the logo, title, and body copy.
In the last poster, I used paper to create the letter “k.” Paul Rand loved using cut paper
in his designs, so I followed his example. Additionally, he would sometimes create very
colorful posters. I alligned information with the sides of the “k” and edge of the title “Lear”.

Process:
After sketching and revising ideas I began working in Adobe Illustrator. Using the pen
tool, I drew the continents and placed them in the circle shape. Thus, I created a “world.”
I then chose my font, font sizes, and used “type on a path tool” to have the words “The
World” and “my eyes” have the curvature affect. I flipped the words “my eyes” so they
would be right-side up. I typed part of the word “through” on the left and then right side
to give the feeling that the “world” was part of the word “through.”

Programs/Tools:
Adobe Illustrator
Objectives:
Create a board with boxes for text.
Leave space for an image in the center of the design.
Create swirls to make the design more decorative.
Process:
After creating the yellowish background, I added a thick border. I designed the swirls
with the swirl tool and changed the styling of the swirls. After doing some research, I
learned how to create swirls on the edge of the boxes I created. I used filler text to help
with the visualization of the design. I altered the original design as necessary until my
client was satisfied.
