Interview with The Counsellor

Us: We students from UiTM Shah Alam came here to interview you about the teacher’s attitude
towards student discipline in this school. We want to know whether the teacher’s here can
handle their discipline problems and also how do they handle the problems. We have
prepared many questions to ask you about it. First of all, how many years have you been a
counsellor?

Counsellor: I started posting as a counsellor on 2008 at Langkawi and move here to Shah Alam
following my husband on 2010 until now. So I have been a counsellor here for about
8 years.

Us: From your experience as a counsellor of this school, How many students had come here for
counselling with you.

Counsellor: Actually this school is a very big school with about 2400 students studying in this
school. I can say that a lot of student applied to study here every year. Last week,
about 700 student from primary school registered for this school next year. We had
to add about 12 classes for form 1 next year. With such a big number of students in
this school, actually every day we got client here either they came here voluntarily,
because of discipline problem or consultant with their parents. So I can say that I’m
as a counsellor here are quite busy every day. It’s because not only with my job as a
counsellor, I have to know everything about the school where I have to take note
about every workers, teachers and student in this school. We as counsellors here
have to know and take care about them.

Us: What does the students that come here willingly, what did they come for counselling about?
For example, did they discuss about family problems or about their discipline problems in
this school.

Counsellor: Actually we can’t really answer the question about the students that came here
willingly because we kept confidential about our student’s problem. But mostly they
did not come because of discipline problems. Actually student’s that really got
discipline problem doesn’t come here voluntarily, they come here because the
teacher sent them here or their parents called us to take care of them. Mostly
student here came here because of they got problems with their family or their
background or when “accidents” happens in couples here.

Us: So normally students that were ordered to come here is mainly because of their own actions
or do they have some underlying problems that makes them retaliate differently in school or
did they just simply being naughty or due to their family background or something?

Counsellor: Actually 90% of our client got family problems and usually broken family causes the
discipline problem.

Us: For the other 10%, why did they come here?

Counsellor: They come here because of themselves where mostly due to problems with their
peers. The location of this school is not at the flat area. So the students that come to
this school mostly comes from a rich family
