JAM OF THE
MONTH
Track
‘The Last Word’
from ‘Moody Blues’

JTC SAYS

This is quite an unusual chord progression, but you can use it as an extended A# minor
jam, with a few juicy chords thrown in! We’ll show you the scales as Bb, to make it easier to
read. Use minor pentatonic (Bb Db Eb F Ab) and Aeolian (Bb C Db Eb F Gb Ab) as your basic
melodic framework. The only chord which causes real problems is the E13 try using E major
pentatonic (E F# G# B C#) here. If you’re already using a standard Bb minor pentatonic
shape, you just have to hop up 3 frets to get the E major pentatonic (same shape as Db
minor pentatonic).

Remember that there are no hard and fast rules in music, it’s about expressing what YOU
want to say so experiment and use your ears before resorting to tried and testing scales/
shapes.
