REGULATIONS FOR HOLDING JEAN


SIBELIUS INTERNATIONAL
ON-LINE INSTRUMENTAL MUSIC
COMPETITION
November 25 - 28, 2022

GENERAL PROVISIONS
Organizer: The International Cultural
Association of Turku (Turun
kansainväliset kulttuurimarkkinat
yhdistys ry) in collaboration with the
Finnish company
SEM Consulting Oy.

WHO
Soloists and collectives of all levels of
experience and ages from different
countries can take part in the
competition.
The competition shall be held remotely,
in the absence of contestants.

Deadline for applications is


November 10, 2022.
The application form can be found on
the
website www.jsfestcompetition.com.
Applications are to be sent by email
to info@semconsulting.fi .
After receiving an application
org.commettee will send to the
contestant a personal registration
number and an invoice for payment.
Please, note: Separate application for
each nomination!

The participants, who are going to take


part in the competition, must send to
the Organizing Committee via e-
mail info@semconsulting.fi the
following documents before November
12:
• a photo of the contestant
• a short creative biography (text about
the participant, 8-10 sentences)
• a photocopy of passport or birth
certificate
• competition videomaterials (YouTube
links)

Video recording requirements:


• The video recording must be made no
earlier than January 1, 2020. It is
allowed to use both professional and
amateur video recordings, incl. from
various concert venues, subject to all
other requirements.
• The competitor sends all materials
under the registration number.
• Competitive video material can be
presented:
1) in the form of one video
recording, i.e. all works are performed
in succession one after another and
the recording should be made in one
file without interruption and editing.
Pauses in recording between
compositions are allowed. The video
:
recording must be signed as follows
(for example, participant registration
number - 15): 15_1_ Rusalka _2_Valse
Triste _3_ Birds Song _4_ Northern
Lights
2) or in the form of separate video
recordings of competitive works,
each file must be signed (registration
number and title of a specific work in
accordance with the sequence of
performances), for example (participant
registration number - 15): 15_1_Valse
Triste_ Sibelius
15_2_Song of the minstrel_ Glazunov
etc. by the number of works of the
declared competition program.
• Each piece should be shot in one
continuous take. It is forbidden to
process using any effects and edit
video during performance.
• The video must clearly show the
competitor (full height), the
accompanist and the instrument (piano
or grand piano). In the group
nomination, all members of the group /
ensemble must be clearly visible.
• Due to the COVID - 19 situation, it is
allowed to use the accompaniment
recording (piano / grand piano) for the
2022 competition. The phonogram
(backing track) should not contain
anything but music. Orchestral
accompaniment and backing tracks
created in MIDI format are not allowed.
• Exceeding the time limit for the
execution of the competition program
by more than 60 seconds is not
allowed. If the video recording does not
comply with the technical requirements
of the Competition, the organizing
committee has the right to demand that
:
the video material be provided in the
required quality or to reject the
application.

PERFORMANCE OF THE
PARTICIPANTS IN THE
COMPETITION
All participants are divided on Junior
section (age groups under 12 years old
and 12-15 years old) and Senior
section (age groups 16-20 and older
than 20 years old).

For all participants the online


competition shall be held in one
round.

THE PROGRAM:
Soloists and collectives can participate
in the competition in next categories:
Category A: Instrumental performance
(violin, viola, violoncello, harp, guitar,
piano, clarinet, flute, oboe, bassoon,
trumpet, trombone, saxophone, French
horn, tube) with an obligatory
composition by Jean Sibelius
A1 of age under 12, A2 of age 12-15,
A3 of age 16-20, A4 of age over 20
years old:
The program – two compositions are
performed:
1) Composition by Jean Sibelius
2) Composition at the choice
Performance time is no more than 12
minutes (for categories of age under
16)
Performance time is no more than 15
minutes (for categories of age over 16
years old)

Category B: Instrumental performance


:
(violin, viola, violoncello, harp, guitar,
piano, clarinet, flute, oboe, bassoon,
trumpet, trombone, saxophone, French
horn, percussion instruments such as:
Marimba, Xylophone, Vibraphone,
Timpani, Multi percussion) without an
obligatory composition
B1 of age under 12, B2 of age 12-15,
B3 of age 16-20, B4 of age over 20
years old:
The program – two compositions are
performed:
1) Composition by an European
composer
2) Composition at the choice
Performance time is no more than 12
minutes (for categories of age under
16)
Performance time is no more than 15
minutes (for categories of age over 16
years old)

Category C: Instrumental performance


(pianos duets “four hands”)
C1 of age under 12, C2 of age 12-15,
C3 of age 16-20, C4 of age over 20
years old:

2) Composition at the choice
Performance time is no more than 12
minutes (for categories of age under
16)
Performance time is no more than 15

C5 of age under 12, C6 of age 12-15,

Category D: Instrumental performance

The program – two compositions are
performed:
1) A composition of a composer of the
17-18 centuries
2) A composition of a composer of the
19 - 20 centuries
Performance time is no more than 15
minutes.

Category E: Instrumental performance


(wind instruments: clarinet, flute, oboe,
bassoon, trumpet, trombone,
saxophone, French horn, percussion
instruments such as: Marimba,
Xylophone, Vibraphone, Timpani, Multi
percussion) without an obligatory
composition
E1 of age under 12, E2 of age 12-15,
E3 of age 16-20, E4 of age over 20
years old:

1) Composition by a Scandinavian

participant
2) Composition at the choice
Performance time is no more than 10
minutes.

Category G: Chamber performance


(duets, trios, quartets, and ensembles
of more than 5 people up to 12 people)
Ensembles can perform any
instruments (string instruments, church
music instruments, percussion
instruments).
G0 of age under 12, G1 of age 12-20,
G2 of age over 20 years old, G3 of
mixed age:
The program - two compositions are
performed:
1) Composition by a west- European
composer
2) Composition at the choice
Performance time is no more than 10
minutes.

Category H: Chamber orchestras
(more than 12 people):
H1 of age 12-20, H2 of age over 20
years old, H3 of mixed age:
Chamber orchestras can perform any
instruments.
The program - two compositions are
performed:
1) Composition by a west- European
composer
2) Composition at the choice
Performance time is no more than 15
minutes.

Category I: Concertmasters
performance The participants of this
category can perform with the vocal
participants together. Vocalist illustrator
does not get awards and perform in
Instrumental Music Competition.

I1: concertmasters of age 16-20


The program – two compositions are
performed:
1) A piece of Scandinavian composer
2) Folk piece of the participants country
Performance time is no more than 10
minutes.
I2: concertmasters of age 16-20
The program – two compositions at the
choice are performed.
Performance time is no more than 10
minutes.
I3: concertmasters of age over 20
The program – three compositions are
performed:
1) A piece of Jean Sibelius
2) A piece of the participant´s country
3) Aria
Performance time is no more than 20
minutes.

I4: concertmasters of age over 20
The program – three compositions are
performed:
1) A piece of European composer
2) A piece of the participant´s country
3) Aria
Performance time is no more than 20
minutes.

Category J: Instrumental performance


on harpsichord without an obligatory
performance
J1 of age under 12, J2 of age 12-15,
J3 of age 16-20, J4 of age over 20
years old:
The program – three compositions are
performed:
1) Composition by a Scandinavian
composer
2) Composition of the composer of XX
century
3) A piece of the participant´s country
Performance time is no more than 10
minutes (for categories of age under
16)
Performance time is no more than 15
minutes (for categories of age over 16
years old)

Category K (for amateurs of age


over 20 years old): Instrumental
performance (wind instruments:
clarinet, flute, oboe, bassoon, trumpet,
trombone, saxophone, French horn,
tube and drums) without an obligatory
composition
The program – two compositions are
performed:
1) Composition by a Scandinavian
composer
2) Composition at the choice

Performance time is no more than 15
minutes

REGISTRATION FEE AND


PARTICIPATION PAYMENT:
Application registration: 30 €. Should
the applicant cancel his participation,
this amount is not refundable.
Cost of participation: €70 / soloist, €
110 / duo, € 130 / trio and € 140 /
quartet, €160 quintet, ensembles
starting from six peoples pay € 200.
Payment is for one nomination.
Participation in several nominations is
possible, while for each of them a
separate application and the
corresponding payment are provided.

The organizing committee will send an


invoice for payment with bank details
only after receiving an application for
participation. Registration fee and
payment for participation must be
made before November 15, 2022. A
scanned copy of confirmation of
payment for application registration
and participation must be sent to e-mail
address: info@semconsulting.fi

JURY
The jury of the competition Jan Sibelius
is composed of internationally
recognized professional musicians and
teachers. The decision made by the
jury is not subject to revision.

PRIZES AWARDED AT THE ON-LINE


CONTEST
Participants are evaluated in each
nomination and age group separately.
Those who took 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th
:
and 6th places shall be awarded a
diploma of I, II, III, IV, V and VI degrees
in each age group. It may be possible
that some special diplomas will be
granted. No cups or cash prizes will be
awarded.

The competition results will be


published on the website
www.jsfestcompetition.com on
November 29th, 2022. The Organizing
Committee send participants diplomas
by e-mail from 2 to 7 of December
2022.
