H.P. Jost Reports, Committee On Tribology, Ministry of Technology and Industry, London 1966

This document discusses tribology, which is defined as the science and technology of interacting surfaces in relative motion. It notes that whenever two surfaces are in sliding contact, there is always some friction and wear. Friction and wear can be both good and bad, depending on the application. The document provides examples of where friction and wear are desired versus not desired. It also discusses ways to reduce friction and wear, such as changing materials, surface roughness, contact forces, or using lubrication. Finally, it outlines some of the main disciplines within tribology like solid mechanics, fluid mechanics, and material science.

What can we do to reduce friction and wear?

So TRIBOLOGY is the study of
- Change one or both surfaces:
- choice of material
- surface roughness - Friction,

- Reduce amount of relative motion between the surfaces - Wear and

- less sliding
- use rolling instead of sliding
- Lubrication
- Reduce the contact forces
- Reduce the contact between the sliding surfaces:
- use a lubricant such that there is increased separation
between the surfaces.
- use e.g. magnetic levitation

4. mixed lubrication
5. full fluid film lubrication
Wear:
1. due to mechanical mechanisms
2. due to physical mechanisms (molecular interaction)
