Graphic Organizers Assignment

“Timeline of Helen Frankenthaler”

In this assignment students are to watch Helen Frankenthaler interview (1993), read “Helen Frankenthaler,
Abstract Painter Who shape a Movement Died at 83” by Grace Glueck and the art story article on Helen Frankenthaler to
gather information on the artist to complete the graphic organizer assignment. The assignment is made up of three
section, Early Life, 1940s-death, and Legacy. On the first two sections students are to provide in bullet points at least 4
facts for each section on Frankenthaler’s life and work. On the last section, Legacy students are to give their own
opinions on what Helen Frankenthaler contributed to the art world and what their favorite artworks from Frankenthaler
are. (This is an individual assignment and students will finish the assignment alone. However, upon completing the
assignment, students are to get into group of 4 or 5 to discuss their answers on assignment.)

Early
Life

•Studied under hans Hofmann in 1950 where she pioneered her soak stain technique.
•She used this technique to create, "Mountains and Sea"(1952" which was groundbreaking at the time
•painter Morris Louis said that her technique was the, "Bridge from Pollock to what was Possible."
•Louis, Noland and Frankenthaler developed Color Field Painting
1940s - •Unlike other abstact Expressionism artists, Frankenthaler was inspired by nature.
•She and Robert motherwell was nick named the golden couple.
death •she died in 2011 at her home in Connecticut

•Her soak stain technique influence and basically created the Color field movement in art
•Her art was totally different than many of her male peers at the time on medium and theme
•In addition, unlike other abstract artists who focus on self, her painting focused on nature which was
different and unqiue.
•My favorite artwork from Frankenthaler is, "Mountains and Sea"1952 and "Canyon"1965
Legacy •The watercolor like effect by the layering of the thin coat of Acylic paint create a sense of calmness and
unity.
