1) Solve the following simultaneous equations:

3𝑥 + 𝑦 + 1 = 0-----1
𝑥 2 + 𝑦 2 = 3 − 𝑥𝑦---2
Y=-3x-1-----------3
Sub3 into 2 sub x into 3
2 2
X +(-3x-1) =3-x(-3x-1) y=-3(-1)-1
X2+(-3x-1)(-3x-1)=3+3x2+1x =3-1
2 2 2
X +(9x +3x+3x+1)=3+3x +1x =2
10x2+6x+1-3x2-1x-3=0
7x2+5x-2=0
(7x-2)(x+1)
X=2/7 x=-1

2) Find the range of values of x for 𝑥(4 − 𝑥) + 76 > (𝑥 + 2)2

x(4-x)+76 > (x+2)2
4x-x2+76 >(x+2)(x+2)
4x-x2+76 >x2+2x+2x+4
-x2+4x+76 >x2+4x+4
-x2+76>x2+4
-x2-x2>4-76
-2x2>-72
X2<-72/-2
X2<36
X<6

3) The quadratic equation 𝑝𝑥 2 + 7𝑞𝑥 + 16𝑝 = 0, where p and q are constants, has equal roots. If p
and q are positive, find the ratio p : q in the simplest form.
a=p b=7q c=16p

4) The roots of the quadratic equation 3𝑥 2 + (−ℎ − 6)𝑥 + 𝑘 = 0 are h and − 3, where h and k are
constants. Find the value of h and of k.
Sor =-b/a por =h(-2/3)
=h+(-2/3) =-2h/3
=h-2/3

A=3 b=-h-6 c=k

Sor=-(-h-6/3) por =k/3
=h+6/3
=h/3+2

h-2/3=h/3+2 -2h/3=k/3
(h-2/3-h/3-2=0)3 -2(4)/3=k/3
3h-2-h-6=0 -8/3=k/3

5) The equation of a curve is 𝑦 = 𝑝(𝑥 + ℎ)2 + 𝑘, where p, h and k are constants. The curve has a
minimum point (3, 4) and passes through the point (1, 12)
a) State the value of h and of k
b) Find the value of p
a) p(x+h)2+k
x+h=0
